It'll keep you busy swapping it in
I have changed other manual gearboxes and taken them out to change clutches, or do other work on them, either on a gravel drive or in our garage, the hardest being an old style BMW 2.8. Purely because of its size. I took it out on my own but needed a mate to be able to line up the splines in the clutch on reassembly. No I haven't ever had a Disco so haven't changed the gearbox single handed at the side of the road. I'm getting pretty nifty with the Defender box though, having taken it out and put it (or its replacement) back in a few times now.
Get the version with the high capacity oil pan!
....that I am feeling really sad.
We went to clip the cats rear claws because she is ripping herself to bits.
At a crucial moment she kicked out while struggling to escape from our evil clutches and too much was taken off one of her claws.
She's bleeding quite a bit and I feel a real a-hole for hurting her. I have put some astringent on it and I am hoping it will stop bleeding. Blood always looks worse than it is (it seems to flow so well).
But, that's the last time I do it.
Sorry Scratchy-cat.
I have applied it, I even ground some up and put the toe in it. Waiting for it to all calm down and for her to stop licking it and making it bleed.I always keep a styptic pencil for just such things, same thing you use on shaving cuts ...

Have you ever tried taking out or putting back in a Disco 2 auto box, without a ramp etc?
I wouldn't dream of doing it.
So there are practical problems particularly as W cannot drive at the moment.
But yes, for all the reasons you stated, it is the obvious solution.
Maybe I will be able to order a recon box from Ashcrofts and get it sent to a Landy independent I know who would then swap them, and I could send the other box back to them, or even take it to them in the back of the Disco. (!) Or even spend the night in an 'otel near them.
I am still going to try tightening the bolts on the valve chest or whatever it is called as that seems to be a "thing" to do and I know one on here who recommends it and another who did it on his RR, and it worked.
I don't believe in miracles, but it'll be a fairly simple thing to do once the current hoo-hah settles down.
