The two studs that hold the engine number in place actually unscrew if you get under them with a small screwdriver.
Only visible difference between a standard 1275 and a 998 or 1098 is the carb size and the 1275 has two core plugs in the clutch end of the block whereas the others have only one.
Sporty 1275 has extra stud in head of course but MG etc dont (except MG 1300GT and Van den plas etc)
It's not a big problem, I would tell dvla you bought the car and notice that the engine number is wrong and could they change it,

These things.

Did you need to provide the DVLA with any paperwork to prove the new engine was legit?

I had to change the engine number in the RR to get the paperwork in order before I could register it here.
OF had fitted the engine in a new RR and had not changed the engine number. It was just fill in the V5 with the relevant numbers and it was changed no problems.
I probably had the only 6.3L RR on the DVLA system, still on the system.

No paperwork needed for changes.

However when we fitted the new engine into the P38(different1) when we were here, We had to provide proof that the engine was legit. We had to specifically ask the rebuild seller to include the engine number on the sales invoice to us, cos the UK are 1 of the most relaxed place for car mods and changes TBH.

Wots the make, model and part number ovvit? Can't be that difficult to wuk oot worrit does. Smoke controls a fing blocking/unblocking a hole.
Got all the numbers etc off it.
But it works a bit more complicated than that.
It can put just the hot water through it, or just the CH through it, or both. I THINK! So not just one hole, but basically yes a variation on this theme. (The new ones only do one hole according to the plumber, who says these are only used to replace old ones, new builds have two open or closed valves, much easier. I guess the old ones played up!
So I am going to make sure it has access to water so I am not fiddling with it dry, then I will attach live and earth, then see what the other wires do and how much power I need to put to each one to get it to actuate.
If this was compressed air I'd be all over it! ;)

Thanks all, I am feeling very much reassured that I will be ok with the Historic Mini.
It will feel good to ride around in it knowing no road-tax is due and the ULEZ etc. can go do one. :D
I wonder if I should fit extra security to it; because it might be too tempting for the "boy-racers" to ignore and British cars always had such easily defeatable locks. :(
Dead right!!
Piece of pistachio to get into.

That's how I met my ex-wife!!!! (And no it wasn't her Mini. But I've told the story before, I think!);)🤣

These things.

Those are they, used to have a few in stock for changing engine numbers :)

I found this!
It explains brilliantly how the blessed motorised valve works and has some memorable quotes which totally clarify why it is "black magic" and how it can go wrong.
Also why it needs a "hot water off" feed.
Any of you with one will enjoy reading it. It even has some humour in it!

With it I should be able to see what is going on and if I can possibly persuade the new one to work like the old one.
Enjoy the rest of the day folks.
:):):)

Dead locks and bar are easy to fit ...

Not a Mini, but you'll get the jist of it ..

The thermostat housing is different as is the top rad hose, if I think about it for a while im sure there are another few things
but only a mini guru would know by looking at it. Tappet chest breather & the breather on the timing chain cover are different too.

Get a removable steering wheel.

Love this!!

You are right about the stat housing, I had to change the one off the MG Metro engine when I put it in the Mini. Also the dizzy may be different. Electronic ignition versus points, plus the need for a ballast resisted wire to the coil.
We could bang on about this all night! And I cannot remember which way things changed!

Sitting here when we should both be driving to Chichester to enjoy the Royal Marine Band Christmas Special.
We often go and it is a great evening.
But W's guts are playing her up too much for us to be able to attend.
I'd email the tickets to anyone on here who wants them except that they are for a handicapped person and her carer, so a bit cheaper, which means it'd be dodgy.
Such a shame, still, there you go...:(

Sorry to hear your dear lady is unwell. Have a quiet "together time" at home instead. :D
