As a side note have always wanted to buy an old commercial property that’s in the middle of knowhere and convert it to a home

Anyone else have a dream like that please and to be honest on reading up it seems that planning allow that for a disused commercial property can be turned into residential

See that buying a plot of land and putting a mobile park home is now very difficult to do with all the regs

If you have that much money, instead of having chandeliers in your kitchen why not simply have staff to do the cooking for you in a kitchen "below stairs" as they always used to be in biggish houses?
Back in Gerogian Bath most houses had that. Our house there had the original kitchen in the basement, and they would have staff. My bedroom on the top floor had been for the servants, the ceiling was only about 6 foot 6 off the floor!

We couldn't afford staff so our kitchen was on the ground floor and we did our own cooking!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

At the end of the day a "barn conversion" is exactly that! Or a church or chapel conversion.
I'd not want to do one as the planners still stick their flipping oars in, and the high ceilings mean it costs a fortune to heat.
They often won't let you put a proper upper floor in so you end up sleeping on a "mezzanine" or, as you and I would call it, a landing!🤣🤣🤣

Agreed ref barn conversions, useto work a lot in them in Kent and customers would always say about not being able to many things along with the huge cost of upkeep so indeed wouldn’t go near one , grade 1 listed homes they couldn’t even paint or change the wallpaper without getting an inspection from a committee and then all the paperwork

But are stupid money starting around 500k

When I was casually looking in Dorset I saw an empty warehouse / shop around 80’ wide x 30’ x deep , had an upstairs floor so that could e bedroom , then divide it to have a 30 foot wide workshop for the landy then a wall for the living area

Had a concrete floor and new roof , think they were asking around 80 k for it, of course well out my price range but thought my god that would have been a fantastic place to live

To then walk through the door onto a nice workshop , lift as well

Oh well maybe one day , lol

When was that and where in Dorset? I am guessing somewhere north or northwest of where we are!
80k won't buy flip all nowadays!!

Indeed was well north of Dorchester , a good 7-8 months ago , for the life of me can’t find it again as I thought I had screenshot the web page but alas can’t find it

Apologises as I forgot u lived in Dorset

Rent wise I looked on Portland and see a 1-2 bed is around £850 per month

Hopefully I can go to the top half of Dorset to find a place either on a farm or really remote , even the park homes look really nice but some want outrageously momthly rents

If I can will give my current place up, put all my stuff into storage and then look for a place while I’m down there , might even sleep in the landy to save money as some B and B want £70+ per night which would hammer my savings

Been going there since 1968 and has been a lifelong dream and really hope I can pull it off

There is nothing wrong with north Dorset, or even Wilts or Somerset. It has all the advantages of not being on the tourist map.
Portland is a weird place. I wouldn't live there. The weather can be very rough indeed, and some of the peeps there are a bit inbred! But of course anywhere near the coast is stupidly expensive.
I had quite a few colleagues who lived near Blandford. Much cheaper. and a bit hillier so actually the views are less boring.

Bless u for the advice which is invaluable ,I’m 58 now so hopefully I can do it before I’m 62

Also thinking the same in moving out of the tourist areas along with of course living away from the coast as the landy wouldn’t like it,

Think beaminster was another place and indeed Branford , many thks and imagine I should be able to move in 3-4 x years time as I’ll need to save deposits for tenancy , moving costs, storage etc ,

Would make such a massive dream come true , plus of course am seriously thinking of waiting until I get another dog and many landlords won’t accept large dogs but more accept small dogs

So When I move down there with all my stuff in storage to save costs I’ll more than likely sleep in the car as no point getting a roof tent which are 1-2K , will just get a mattress etc seeing there’s tons with the seats folded down etc , then just get takeaway etc , might have to park on a camp ground so not on the side of the road

I better stop waffling, lol

Be careful of storage. Its expensive. You tend to leave stuff innit yer chuck out after, anorl.

Good morning

Indeed and many thks ,, seems they double in Price after 4 x weeks

Once I’m ready will ensure I thin the items right down to the bare essentials

Doing some rough maths it seems to be cheaper if I get rid of the sofas , bed, white goods and buy all new seeing there large items so iif I can reduce the size should just have the bare minimum essentials

Think it would also be safer to sleep in a camp site instead of a side road etc
