Partly depends on your origins, in North America they are all like that.

However, I do have some rationale for the superiority of the ring doughnut.

The best bit if a doughnut is the crispy bit on the outside, not the doughey bit in the middle.
With a ring, you have more surface area for a given volume than with a lump.

A doughnut is only a doughnut if it is fried and has a hole. Any supermarket or Greggs 'doughnut' is simply a chewing gum bap impregnated with gunk

The only good thing for a ring doughnut is hoopla.
You can end up in a sticky mess with the jam ones
