...Clarke towers suffered a temporary disaster this afternoon. :(
SWMBO suddenly declared she was cold and "Why isn't the heating working?". :eek:
Last time we had a heating failure (a February as I recall) we were without heating for 4 days because the "qualified" idjit that attended ignored me saying "its the main board that's blown" and went through a step-by step replacement of parts until (guess what? - Yup, a new main board fixed it. :mad::mad::mad: Like I told him on day 1.
Anyway, back to today.....Investigation showed that the thermal trip on the boiler had....err....tripped. :(
This is usually because the pump has failed and heat aint being pulled from the boiler so it trips the safety.
I reset the trip and it tried to start, but it was struggling......the balanced flue fan has been complaining for quite some time about being asked to actually run and balance the flue and has gone into "shake myself to bits" mode several times. Luckily, I had a spare fan ready in my spares stock and it was only a 20 minute job to swap the fan out and hoover all the inside of the boiler out at the same time.
So, heating is back on (for now) and the moaning and wailing has stopped. :D :D :D
 
Oh and I undid it all and took the Jubbly off, without taking the tube off, didn't want to weaken its grip on the fitting.
More blinking "hokey-cokey":mad:.

So three trips out as got hailstoned off twice. And my entire socket set is now on the lounge carpet drying off as I left it open in the back of the Disco, with the door open when the hailstones all kicked off the first time.:rolleyes:

Love the way modern sh!t needs to have yet more sh!t attached to it to do it's job.
Our antedeluvian boiler is balanced flue, but don't have no fan to go wrong! If it needs a fan how can it call itself "balanced"?
Just sayin as I know feck all about all this. Just how to fix my boiler year in year out for very little £s!

Our boiler has two stats on it, either one of which would turn off the gas jets in this scenario, i.e. pump failure.
Hope he replaced all the new parts he put on with your original ones and didn't charge you for unnecessary work.:(:(:(
Ours has a pump-overrun stat that plays up sometimes, don't stop it working but the pipes bang like feck!!
That plus the thermocouple are the only faults it ever has. I keep spares and it takes me longer to take the covers off than it does to repair it.;)
Brign back simplicity I say!!!:D:D:D
anyway, WELL DONE on fixing it yourself!!!!!:):):):):)

I just looked online for a replacement fan and on some sites it was £367 :eek::eek:
So I called my local plumbing & heating folks (they are really good & very helpful).
When I gave him the make & part number he came back to me in about 30 seconds and said "Blimey that's a blast from the past, it will take me a couple of days but you are looking at £200 all in", wow says I, "Is that a recon unit?"
"No, he says, we only sell original manufacturers parts brand new". Diamond blokes!! I prefer to support local businesses than the great sheds & faceless online places. :D :D :D

CBA to get the serial number make model etc off the boiler to check.:(

I have just taken the failing/failed one I removed today apart (it was a refurb'd unit so all the fixings had been drilled out and replaced with nuts & bolts).
I managed to get one of the bearing houses and bearings off and have filled it with oil (I think it is a dried out "oilite" bearing) so that's 50% of bearing tightness resolved (maybe).
The other one I can't easily get at without trying to remove the fan (and that's always difficult to do without destroying it), So maybe I will just put oil in via the shaft as best I can and re-assemble it, as a last-gasp spare.

Better a noisy but working fan than a noisy wife cos the heating ain't working!!!!:D:D:D
I have the same problem with taking our French vacuum cleaner apart. The nut on the end of the armature locks to an aluminium fan and I have no other way of holding the armature to stop it turning when I try to undo the nut. If I could get hold of another nut and was SURE that it wasn't left hand thread, I'd cut it off.:rolleyes:
 
Just read up on the student loans thing.
So those who get brill/well-paid jobs after their degs will pay it off faster so less interest to pay, and good for them, but those who don't and end up with middle incomes will take for ever to pay it off and will be worse off in the long run.

And you have shortages of nurse, teachers etc? Well this will really encourage kids to go for it.........NOT!

I've had a think bout our boiler, and the housing has a seal all around it so air cannot get into it from inside the room and burnt gases cannot get out. So it all has to happen through the hole in the wall. So I think it must be a balanced flue.:rolleyes:

And even getting a simple van at the mo is awful as new ones aren't there due to the chip shortage.
Our mate who runs the CPD franchise had 16 vans on order, delivery due October. Covid has led to soooooo many peeps buying their sh!t online and getting it delivered.
He has never had it so good.:D:D:D
So this is shoving the cost of second hand ones through the roof, if you can find them. As he well knows.
So not much chance of getting one cheap and converting it yorrself.
And of course we have had all the Staycationers buying em up, though now travel restrictions have been lifted the camper-van market might pick up a bit as peeps go back to hols in Benidorm etc.
I'd still go for a caravan though, but them I'm keeping my Discos!;)

Providing tomoz goes without a hitch and we do get our visas, I am going to be instantly in the market for a car trailer, so we can go off to Frogland with the Disco and Wifey's Pluriel on the trailer.
Dunno what's about and have never bought one before so will be a learning curve.
Can't make my mind up whether to buy one that will just take her car, or one much the same size, or whether to look a bit more long term with a view to buying other cars maybe even Discos!:eek::eek::eek: so a bigger one needed!

Yer the staycationers defo pushed the prices through the roof, I agree.. loads of peeps will be wanting
to head to the sun after trying van life & possibly campers will be sitting on the driveways waiting to be
sold. Might be some bargains to be had. :):)

I hope you get your visas sorted tho. Ye you deffo need a big trailer :cool:
Then stick that v8 on it for me. :D:D

Will do, its got diesel night heater tv and cooker fridge etc etc, nicely done and not too big, needs tow bar though
