Oh yeash... one last thing... I want a load of used engine oil. I am tipping it into a bloody great container to start Kai's leaf springs a soaking... If anyone is planning to take thei oil up the tip please bring it round here instead...

And if anyone want to stash any more leaf springs in with Kai's for a month or two then feel free.

Its Shropshire Ryder, but I'm only 20mins or so from Welsh border... I have some oil coming out this week hopefully but its a long way to drop it off!

Ryder.
Ref oil the springs.

Yes oiling the springs will indeed reduce internal friction. But the same effect can be got by using a screwdriver between the leaves and pumping a little oil in. 10 minutes later and its done.

If you want to truly improve your leaf spring ride you will need to dismantle the spring itself.
Use a grinder and/or flexible metal discs to clean and get each leaf, top and bottom sides back to bright clean metal.
Now use a brush to spread grease on each leaf as you re assemble the springs.
NOW you will have the smoothest ride a leaf spring bus can give you.

If you are building a specific car you can remove the odd leaf and make them as soft as you want. Standard number of leaves can get to become as strong as parabolics and the same ride comfort. Remove some leaves and you can tune your springs to the specific vehicle and weight.

Dipping springs into oil, wont dissolve rust or remove it. That must be done manually with power tools.

BTW you can use waxoil to do a similar job and leave the springs on the vehicle. Thin it down a little with white spirit and spray it on. It will spread into the leaves (a chisel/screwdriver helps again) and when you drive you will see rust coloured ooze coming out from each leaf. The more you work the spring the quicker this works.

PS. if you want oil there are several gallons here ready to be collected if you want it.

Oo I'd be up for shropshire if I'm not working :D:D You been venturing out on your own again Benjy? Not learnt from your last mistake? :hysterically_laughi

Ryder, I should get round to an oil change soon, I'll let you know when and you can have the waste oil :)

Andy... When we were preparing to do as you suggested last year... Jai called explaining that he had chatted to your dad and he had given a very serious thumbs down to the dismantling idea. I think the concern was over reassembling... perhaps to do with the hige rivets that hold the whole lot together?

OK...seems I got the wrong end of the stick and the warning from Jai's camp was that if we dismantled the spring in the wrong order we would have problems getting it back together... apologies!

You got some decent lanes around your way mate? Thinking of sneaking off with the family for a campling trip sometime very soon and a weekend by the sea side sounds like a plan!

There are lanes nearby, but I'm not really sure where they are as I haven't been out down here yet, I'm waiting for the locals to take me out :D
