so what happens if i take the oil breather pipe off the intake fanimold

if it stops the injun smoking does it mean piston rings

and if it dunt does it mean valve guides frigged :confused::confused:

snot gunna kill the engine if i do this is it :confused:

Removing pipe won't hurt if running for very short time. If more than a minute then block the hole in the manifold.
If there's lots of fumes/oil coming from the breather pipe then something is pressurising the crankcase (or too much oil) this is probably rings. If you have a vacuum pump you could try leak down test (don't know figures for landrover, sorry).
If using compression tester, turn engine by hand. Then bung a little gear oil in cylinder and do it again. If the figure is much higher then rings are leaking.

Found this figure
445 to 469 psi
Might useful as a guide but with the compression tests it's the variation that's important as apparently most compression gauges are very accurate.

cheers matey ill get onto it later today ( the pressure tester is practicaly brand new used once in 5 years )
if its the rings and i have to take the head off again is it possible to reuse the head gasket ive just fitted or should i get a new one

found a really good price on bearmach rings aswell £6 per pot plus vat :rolleyes:

if it is the rings i think ill do a thread of the whole process wiff plenny of piccies just incase some poor sod comes along after me and has the same problem :D:D

Hey Johnny, you've been having fun I see :D,
Rings are certainly suspect in my book, do you have standard bores?? If so I've a set of rings here you can have, brand new etc etc, mine are 40 thou over I discovered after I ordered 'em. If you want 'em, you got 'em :D

Should be ok to reuse gasket if it's metal composite, you haven't used sealant and it hasn't had too many heat cycles. But if it looks even slightly damaged its probably not worth the risk.

(btw i meant to say that most (cheap) guages are NOT accurate)

If the gasket comes off in one bit, you're possibly alright, but it's a lot of sodding around for something as cheap as a gasket:D

Johnny just taken my landy out across the field for the first time and it smoked rather more than I expected,I think the smoke was a bit white though, but 3-4 times round the field and it is now clear and running fine with no or very little smoke, had me worried, though it is not finished yet and the turbo certainly did whistle. I'm going to put the vid on later when edited.
