OK Griff. Let's engage. I made the effort and went back to your post. You were "disgusted" (You do read the Daily Mail don't you, are "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells"? That's you, isn't it?) about a cloud of dust they kicked up on a dusty road.
How did this inconvenience you and what damage was caused? Was it a legal road? Very difficult to see anything from the photo - you certainly can't see the dust cloud you are referring to. Can barely see any dust from that actually.

Paul - I haven't made the effort to read your article but what I would say, in case this needs pointing out to you, that people do get stuck when conditions get rough. Have you never been stuck? You will also get people who behave irresponsibly within a perfectly responsible and well run trip and get stuck. I can't say and, frankly, neither can you and we weren't there. Maybe you could write to Vince Cobley to see what actually happened? As with all internet forum arguments, this is starting to be centred around hearsay examples and hypothetical nonsense. Widget (was it?) and me are the only people who have actually been on the trips people have been referring to.

No need to read the article, I pasted the relevant sentences. My point was you paying money and saying it was worth it to ensure you don't get stuck! I was pointing out that not only have people got stuck on the same lanes, but that the organisation that took them and their money didn't have the recovery gear or expertise to recover them and had to rely on another group who happened along after three or so hours.
This doesn't, to me, suggest either professionalism, care or guidance and certainly doesn't seem to be worth paying for.

Nice sensible post, Paul. I must say, I agree with you. Although it is always quite good fun to get stuck and no one nor no car is infallible. That said, just to be a bit clearer, the main reason that I liked having an instructor was that he knew the lanes, he knew the history of the area (we passed a B17 crash site on the way round) and could tell us the terrain that we were about to encounter. For me, that was worth more than the £110 that I paid (well £55 because there were two of us in my Land Rover). In fact, it's a bargain. I paid £55 and pitched up. Bloody good.

legal road yes, damage none if you exclude airbourne particle transportation. I had to wait for all vehicles to pass before I could continue and interacted with the locals while i waited. They stopped for 30 seconds and were throwing pens out of the window for the kids, where as we stopped and TALKED to them (being people you know?). Rampaging around the desert in a large convoy with no respect for the locals is bad practice. It breeds contempt and is no way to contuct yourself as a "professional" organisation.

what? "your about to drive over some pre cambrian bedrock that is one of the earliest geological units known to man".

Do you expect foreigners to stop and talk to you in your town when they're over on their holidays? Would you be wound up if 20 Land Rovers came through your town and were gone in 30 seconds? Do you appreciate it when foreigners come to your country and spend some of their hard-earned cash (surely worth more than your brand of "respect").
You have absolutely no respect. None whatsoever. You just think you have because you've made yourself feel better by stopping and talking to them. Treat them like real people and not little Johnny Foreigner and pretend that if you just stop and talk to them and at least try in their own language that it makes them like you. I can't conceive of anything much more patronising on your part Griff.

Do I sound uneducated to you, Griff? How would you know?
Considering the plaque is down a hill away from the road and has significant weathering, you would easily miss it.
You are now contesting what I think is good value and that isn't right. I consider £55 to be exceptionally good value if it means I don't have to research it, plan it and wonder if the road on the map is truly passable. I am not bothered if you disagree because that is your right but don't criticise someone else for disagreeing with you. That's just arrogance.

Have you been to Africa James? have you witnessed their culture and they way they interact? have you been invited into the home of a Berber family for a meal and noit shared a common lanuage? doubt you will get that on a "tour" with 20 other vehicles. I dont care what comes and goes in Bristol, its a western society, things are different, your comparing 2 seperate places (again). as for spending cash, yer we spent cash, but we also respected the people AND their land/country.
and its not about making myself feel better, the kids came upto me while I waited for your buddies to finish pussy footing down a mountain piste. I talked to them about learning English at school and football. They just want to talk to you to further the language skills, so whats the harm in talking to them? or would your rather speed past throwing pens at them? yer, real patronising me

Griff - I am sorry but you have zero right to criticise someone for not stopping in a town and being nice to the locals. This doesn't mean you are respecting them any less by not stopping. The only difference is that you wanted something different out of your holiday than the Protrax people. That's life : deal with it.
Are you saying there is an expectation on the part of the Moroccans that you stop and that this is the cultural difference that I am missing?
"Pussy footing down a mountain piste"? This makes you sound as if you actually disapprove of the off road side of the holiday. You ought to sell your Land Rover on that basis and go off and stop being in denial and join the Green Party. This brand of hypocrisy is not needed. Anywhere.
