i got my gps dongle from maplins has worked a treat on my notebook , as to damage to hard drives i have not had any problems made a bracket/mount for it and lined the base with foam rubber to cushion it against bumps

Baud rate?it depends on the baud rate,i think memory map is 4800 ?
A proper bracket will definitely improve things. We used to fit similar mounts and ruggedised laptops into mobile engineers vans and they seemed to survive (until they got nicked anyway).
From the picture, that laptop display looks great for navigation - I tended to use my GPS stuff (smaller screen as PDA) for tracking routes - I just found it quicker to mark up a paper map to get lost by.

Acewr one notebook, as already said, this is a solid state hard drive so is bullet proof, Memory map software.
I made a cradle for my laptop,once its in and the straps are round it,it aint gonna move anywhere
