Very adrenalin pumping video mate :D

Yep, all looks good, no reason to suspect the axles haven't been checked.

That swivel ball looks bad to me, the rust will be tearing up the seal, I net if that was up to level it must leak! I'll be amazed if it doesn't !

Cheers :)

oh - and yu need a new rear diff nose oil seal - dead easy to do yoself .

i've heard that before! lol, i'll give that a go at some point though. slowly gaining confidence and tools!!

PAS pump looks fecked anaw

how fecked? fecked as in "could give in at any moment", or fecked as in "can keep using it for as long as I like, it'll just get harder and harder"? and how do you know it's fecked?

buster - ok, ditch the time prediction. what are the implications if I simply keep topping up the power steering fluid (which my local garage says is just ATF)? what if it runs out one day? what is it completely fails all of a sudden?

in other words, is this safety related? should i get it sorted ASAP? is my car undrivable again? i assume not... but worth finding out.

Anyway...

yoda - i realise you are ****ed off, but stop posting in my thread.

if you are dyslexic, that's fine - we don't discriminate. just don't post in my thread.

you can clearly operate this site as you have posted in other people's threads with vaguely sensible replies. your replies in this thread are completely meaningless though.

please start a new thread or go to bed!

bustersbus - my reply to you is getting lost, but please read it and reply if you can!

Dont worry about your power steering pump just yet fish.

If it fails altogether then you'll lose your power assistance but still have steering - it won't make a wheel fall off, and if it went on the motorway you'd probably never notice until you came to a roundabout and the steering was stiff.

Keep it topped up for now, yes ATF is correct.

Worth bearing in mind though because if the power steering pump disintegrates it doesnt matter unless it shares a belt with something else. On my v8 the power steering pump drives the alternator. If my pump went I'd lose my alternator too, which is worse.

But you can forget about it temporarily!

Cheers

So... i've spoken to Nene Overland, and they're not being stand-offish at all, which is a good start :D

The guy I spoke to has every confidence in his mechanics, but admits he doesn't know how you would check the swivel ball levels without taking the filler cap off, which is fair enough.

Is there actually any way to check the swivel ball level without taking the filler cap off?!?

They also stand by their opinion, however, that the swivel ball does not need replacing. I popped into a local garage on my way into work this morning and got their opinion on it as well, and they say it does need replacing, as do you lot on here.

So anyway... they've said I'm welcome to pop in and have the swivel ball levels checked (regardless of whether they were done before or not).

If it's has oil in it, then i'll be amazed, but that will prove that it really is fine and not leaking (somehow!).

If it has grease in it, they won't be able to check the level, so will presumably have to push one-shot grease in there until they can't get any more in. If I then turn the wheel left, right, left, right, left, right etc.... and the rusty spot becomes covered in grease, i'll claim it needs replacing!

Also, if they push an entire one-shot in there and it takes all of it, i'll claim it's empty for a reason (which will be true), and that it needs replacing! That, combined with so many opinions that it does need replacing should hint towards it being replaced.

And no... i won't be paying the 2 hours labour to get back to that stage again, because it should have been done at the same time as the bearings, of course!

So... sound reasonable??

Hi....yes it sounds reasonable as do they. The issue with the swivel is that (as i understand it) and have had quoted to me on many occasions, is that if it's rusty or pitted it can't contain the oil or grease as the seal is not good/tight and that it will fail an mot......to be fair surface rust is not an indication of imenent failure but will allow grease out and water in, along with grit which, as we now isn't a good lubricant.....it still works as a device in the steering/suspension department, but if it was my car and when funds allow it would be off and replaced to prevent further damage and cost.....and anyone who says it's okay is not qualified to be under the car.......

Glad your getting somewhere.

Nick.

Right... for sanity's sake, can someone please take a copy of this image, write on it and re-upload it so I know exactly where the following three things are...

- filler cap
- drain plug
- LEVEL CHECK PLUG!!

Thanks in advance! :D

Blue at top is filler (lower end of blue stripe), Yellow (upper end) is roughly the height of the level but i can't see it, Pink (lower end)is the drain......but it is all difficult to see.

thanks for that... i'll take a look when I get home again and see if there are any markings on there.

I had assumed there was just a filler and a drain, you see, so it's completely plausible that they did check. I can't believe they found any oil in there, but who knows...

And presumably, the idea is that you keep pouring in the oil until it starts to come out the level plug, and then stop and put the plugs back in, right?

(unless you use grease, of course).
