ticking like teaspoon on cast bath is normally slipped liner or little end.

Decent knock is big ends.

Really need to hear it.

ruined cam can give similar knocking too think vauxhall 8v cavalier/nova etc

A cam shaft tap is always there it is not affected by engine load. The only thing affect by engine load would be big or little ends. Maybe he's knackered his engine with that water like oil he has had in. A can of STP in with it would have helped.:D:D:D

nah, its not tink tink tinking, its more like the vauxhall cam knock.

As a clue, its volume varies if I'm doing 30ish in 3rd, light throttle. Goes louder and quieter constantly.

Gonna be a rebuild this innit?

2 tins of STP?

2 cans and some 20w50 , see if it quietens down. you have nothing to lose! :D

next time put the right feckin oil in it from the start :p

Who knew.
I don't think the oil is particularly wrong, just not right for mine at this stage of its life (158K).
No more 10/30 for my car I think.

Bloody close mate.
Some considerate truck driver wrote my Focus off on Sunday (I never used it and it was used mainly by a friend) so now I've got a courtesy car while that gets written off which also means I can take the R off the road for a few weeks.

Shame it wasn't that piece 'o ****e, woulda been on for a belting payout lol.

All this STP type stuff is ensures the metal to metal surfaces are lubricated on initial start up until oil flow is established. Nothing more, nothing less. A coating of EP90 would do the same job.
Let's face it, a starter motor cranks the engine at around 250 rpm and idle speed is around 750. Oil pressure is usually achieved in less than 10 seconds at which time the smear of STP is washed away or dissolved to protect your engine for 10 million miles or until you are 98 years of age

^^^^^
Did that and the cam etc was lubed with EP90.

Only thing that wasn't done which I'm still kicking myself about is the cam run-in procedure.

Your initial problem may have been caused by slightly worn motor and thin oil. If any of your cam lobes are worn on the heel beyond the movement scope of the tappets it does not matter how many new tappets you fit. You will still have tappet noise.

was new cam though wasnt it?

Don't know mate cannot remember that far back. But even a new cam can be screwed in less than the blink of an eye if you don't follow the proper procedure. Mostly you can throw them in covered in chip fat and they are ok, other times no matter what you do they gore up. If it was a new cam it should have come with cam lub in the box. That being the case why did he use EP90. Which is good but not as good as cam lub or STP.

is it the same stp product as the oil additive you are on about? is it the same chemicals as the wynns I got?

want summit to hep with short trips and old engines :D

(sorry hammy, just nickin yer thred for a minit :p )

Yes STP oil additive. Wynns is another version of the same thing. Both are designed to reduce friction. They in effect make the oil they are added to slipperier. Used neat to assemble parts they do not run off as oil does but cling to the components shielding them from damage until oil pressure is present. I have used them as assembly mediums for many years.

Been a bit busy so not been about for a few days but, theres progress.
Cam was supplied without lube as it wasn't a cam kit, only a cam and lifters supplied seperately so EP90 seemed the best option.

New lifters arrived today (not britpart, OEM spec) so they'll be going in next couple of days.

I have a Focus which was hit by a truck while it was parked. As a result, I have a new Fiesta courtesy car which I've been using since but had a ride out in the RR tonight and I love it, despite its 'tap tap tap', I turned up the radio and its the best car ever lol.

Good motivation to get it finished before weekend now.

Don't be surprised if you still have a tap tap tap when you fit the new lifters. Hope not but there is a chance you've knackered the cam. Running and driving it with the tap tap will not have helped your cause.

You should have watched wheeler dealers this week , he did a rover v8 cam.

He did use molyslip- and run in for 30 mins- sorry dude
