Im getting about ready to burn this ****ing defender of mine!! I have been through 3 stats now (2 OE 1 genuine), every time its failing to allow water to flow and its overheating. Remove the stat and it wont even get up to opening temperature!! Why is it every landrover I get just wants to try my patience!! Seriously getting ****ed off with these things, so tempted to jack it in and go get a Shogan, so much more reliable!!

Have you got a blockage in one of the rad's, heater or main?

I have ordered up a new rad today and also a 75 degree stat so im hoping that will cure my issues. Just getting right fed up with it now, seems to be never ending and its never little bits, I wouldnt mind if I had to replace bearings and brakes every few months but that stuffs all good, its the big stuff I seem to end up doing. I am proberbly being a bit too fussy on some stuff but still, wish I could just get it done and dusted!!

Some times you have to let the little thing's go, don't forget it's 20 years old. That's the problem with buying an old Land rover, you never know what has or hasn't been done. Still you'll be well pleased when it's done.

Deep breaths, and relax.

Cheers mate. Will have to look into that. Your right though, for £27 can't really go wrong.

Don't know how many of you are site sponsors but a guy from herts lane said this
"I know the Herts laners have an unwritten code of conduct leave nobody help everyone and this includes showing those willing to come out local lanes and how to find them. We will guide everyone especially new motors through and explain exactly what each lane is like including taking them down it first in a scout motor to see.

Many a time Classic Kev as an example said I'm not doing this ill meet you at the end and took the noobies to the other end. some of them jumped in and passengered while we explain which bits we think would not have been suitable etc etc." just wanted to know are you boys the same with Laning as I'm a utter newbie just am so weary of holding you boys up or getting in the way as this is a thing im unknown on

You seem overly worried about green lanes.
You should certainly go with at least another 4x4 as good practice but I've driven most of them in a standard disco and the worse that has happened is the axles have grounded and I have needed a tow to clear them.
You will notice that we go out quite often and your welcome to join us at any time.
You will soon see you have nothing to fear and start enjoying yourself.

I have ordered a new rad now so hoping its sorted soon. Have cheered myself up with a little eBay bargain though, swing away spare carrier, the one that opens with the door for £10.50, not a bad buy...

i doubt its the stat, is ur pump working? Is ur raf heating up evenly?

Hi Dan,

Tis me who said that and the whole point is that everyone is welcome new hands and old hands. Don't worry about holding people up tis not about that at all. The fact that you say your a noobie you should be looked after by anyone worth their salt leading. I suspect Essex lot are much like Herts and will look after you!!

I once in the middle of a lane turned around because it seemed a race to get as many lanes in as possible in a day.

You'll be fine! Chill and enjoy. You should have an enjoyable day with no damage with help from those more experienced etc.

If you need anything just ask shout somone here will help for sure!

I agree about the speed aspect sometimes but just go at my own pace to enjoy the day.

I don't find people behind me getting upset as I keep a sensible pace.

You will find us all a helpful bunch, even helping with roadside repairs if it's possible.

My last trip out I broke a brake line and without hesitation Jon and all the others were getting stuck in (I would say helping but truth be told they got straight in and I was the one helping)

A truely great bunch and like most of us 4x4 drivers anywhere in the country, would do all we can to help.

Ditto.
Great bunch of Landy enthusiasts and I always enjoy the company as much as the lanes.

On the 12th august I will be laning in the morning with a friend and our kids. We'll be spending as much time with nets in the fords and a trip to the park as we will laning.
If you can tolerate that you are welcome to join us (as is everyone else).

The pump is working but my suspicions are the belt may be slipping. I'm getting a good charge rate (14v on each battery) but the alternator does vibrate around. I'm gonna do rad, pump and stat and have a go at making the alternator a bit more secure and see if that helps. When I flushed out the heater matrix loads of crap came out, i suspect the rad isn't much better...

mabey a good flush is all thats needed!

Tried it and not impressed with the results, even after a few drains it's still throwing up gunk. I get the feeling the previous engine may have suffered head gasket failure, it's not the worse I have seen but I'm not convinced on the rad, for the cost it might as well be done properly. The alternator is my biggest concern as it vibrates about 10mm at the top, I'm gonna see if I can make my 300tdi bracket and alternator fit, that was brand new and higher power

Mines only worth £18k and ive not got anymore to put to it, but thanks for the heads up chap! Dont forget youre bits in my unit still, and my straps my love!
