No problem Stu. Glad of the company.

Got the head back on but had to abandon it tonight as it got to dark to work properly.

Just got to put everything back together and adjust the tappets and all will be good to go.

I just hope it ain't those rings that have gone.

Well done on the bearing.

I managed to get a hour under the Disco before it got dark.

The steps are off at last.

A good few weeks ago I took off the EGR and whilst at it, removed the intercooler and gave it a good clean. In the process I undone the top coolant pipe. Then refitted it all and then toped up via the header tank...........

Noticed the car was getting to temp very quickly (used to take an age), very slightly higher than normal, but stuck where it was (around 1/3). Did some reading up and realised I should have topped up via the two rubber bungs. Starting feels different a second or two longer before she fires.

VERY VERY VERY paranoid about the head, Just been reading some real horror stories.
I'm going back to B&Q first thing to buy some radiator drain valves to replace the plastic bungs, that way I can be sure all of the sir has gone. I guess only time will tell:doh::doh::doh::doh:

I just chucked the water in the header tank. Nothing went wrong?

Have I done something wrong

Filling up by the bung on the thermostat housing will overfill the header tank, but that will find it's own level by ejecting any excess water from the cap.

Nothing to worry about. An easy job to Change on these engines.

I'd rather not blow / warp a head due to my stupidity :frusty:
The system def had air in it and still does. I'll replace the bungs with brass ones that have bleed valves.

Then get the system hot and bleed any air out. Read on one of the threads about positioning the header, a bit higher ensuring any remaining air works its way up whilst i squeeze them pipes.

Fingers crossed I havent done any damage?
No oil in water and no milk on dip stick / oil filler cap.

You said the temp never went above 1/3rd on the gauge. Sounds ok to me. Mine always sits half way. Takes only a few miles to get there and never goes above.

Well no more air in the system. I think / hope:eek:
Took it for a 5 mile run this evening and temp is sticking a little lower than it has been of late.
Heater is blowing hot, but not like it used to be. Maybe its time for a full flush?

I'm going to give the next SLROC driving day a miss. I really need to find some time to crack on with some maintenance.

Chris, if the offers still open let me know when your next spending at day (pref @ a weekend) at your workshop. I'm getting really feedup with laying on gravel. I'll bring tea bags & doughnuts:D

Or what about a maintenance day, it was talked about a while ago.

My current list of works (in order)
Handbrake - I wont pass scrutineering next time.
De-Cat - Already have the pipe.
Tappets
Fuel sedimenter
Fuel filter
Diff oils
Swivel housing oils
Nipple greasing:D:D:D

She's also feeling a bit lacking in acceleration recently. I've read a lot about how the lift pumps deteriorate and its not noticeable due to the slow change in performance. Mine is now @ 173K with a full history and i cannot find mention of it every being replaced. Maybe something i need to look at? of course the De-Cat may help.

I'd like to come to a maintenance day too :) I've got coffee and sausage rolls :D

I need:

PAS box fitting (urgent)
Handbrake tightening (urgent)
Fuel sedimenter cleaning out (urgent)
Diff and box oils changed (urgent)
Timing belt done (after all the urgent stuff)
De-cat with whole new exhaust (after all the other stuff above)
I'd like my nipples greasing too :D :D :D

Also need to:

Fit my new bumper when it arrives
Remove dickie seat mountings and belts in the rear
Re-fit n/s passenger seat, need to drill out 2 bolts as they sheared when I removed the carpets.
Fit lightbar and CB
Fix leak in roof somewhere
Put on spare wheel cover :D

Welding is being sorted in the next few weeks.

Anywhere we can arrange a maintenance day instead of SLROC day? It could be called a money saving day!

Got a whacking great stack of tools here but I also have a nasty driveway with sharp pokey bits sticking out.

In other news...... I bought a 5 litre tin of polish for the old lad which I'm going to do this week so don't want to dirty it just yet. Need to get some photos first

I've meantioned getting a maintance day a couple of times as well all seem to have a few things that need sorting out, My skills with a spanner arn't that great but willing to help people out with a hand,

I would say come round mine but I dont have the right place, lol parking a pain and a residence's assotiation that will kick up.

I know that SLROC have maintances day's for members from time to time, but dont think any booked at mo.

Just had a thought about this.

I know it goes against the in written Landyzone rules, but would anyone object to paying a small fee for such a facility.

I know someone who rents a large barn to work on his projects. I have not asked him yet, but I know if we offered to rent the space for a Sunday to work on the landy's he may be up for it.

He has his rent and lecky to cover plus some beer tokens for the use of his tools and things.

What are your thoughts? He is near Sudbury so easy to reach as well.

Maybe it does? but it also seems fair!
He's paying rent on the place and I would be happy not to be laying on a gravel bed. If he is happy to do so then I could do any of the following:
Saturday 19th March
Sunday 20th March
Saturday 26th March

Or if it needs to be mid week, I am happy to take a day off work:D also means my monthly weekend pass for some laning / pay & play day is kept free!

Well mine ended friday like this

Long old day, started off me going to my mates garage in colchester to get the floor welded up (had a small 4" hole just behind the passenger seat) just coming off the A12 and i notice the battery light on  the steering had also gone very heavy. Thought the aux belt had snapped so limped it to my mates garage (2 mins from A12). Belt was fine but the tensioner bearing had colapsed, chucking the belt off

New tensioner ordered and fitted. 4" hole ended up being around 18" of plate being welded in  On the way home temp needle shot up to halfway very quick and cold heaters, pull over and have steam ****ing out from under the bonnet. Rad pipes rock solid and expansion bottle looked like a mini volcano

Saturday took the head off

Got to get it pressure checked as it has a few cracks round the glowplug holes plus one of the glowplugs had oil on the shaft of it which didnt fill me with hope :(

I also need a new rad as mine has more mud in it then fins

Happy days :D

BTW does anyone have a crank locking tool as i might as well do the cam belt now

Errrrr....did you not make the connection and try a new rad first or did you just fancy doing the difficult bit first?

No :D

The way my logic worked was I drove 40 miles to colchester at midday temps (granted it wasnt scorching) and had no issue with temps as i get there tensioner fails and obviously water pump is pumping. Car over heats on way home in the evening as soon as i leave colchester.

I therefore concluded the lack of water circulating the engine has cooked it. Granted the rad probably didnt help the situation but i dont see this as the root cause.
