Well my trusty old p38 work horse gave up the ghost this week, looks very much like the crank seal started leaking, lost some oil and seized up, (no i didnt notice the leak as it is my work truck and was parked in one of my blokes drive for the last week)
He started it from cold, drove about a mile and it locked up solid, when i got there i dipped the oil and it was not even on the stick, looked underneath and saw oil everywhere on the sump, front pulley etc, put a bar on the crank and it wouldnt budge.
Now i am a bit gutted as i thought the engine was the best part, i put a low mileage lump in about two years ago when the head went on the original (200k) engine
Like i said, she is a work truck, it has had a hard life towing 3.5 ton for a lot of it, high mileage, plenty of problems (nothing that stops it working) dents, scratches, and generally not the prettiest shiny example you have seen lol, but she has served me very well in the 9 years i have run her.
What should i do,
a) do i look for another engine to drop in her and still have an old beaten truck with problems thats well worn and wait for the next major thing to go.
b) advertise her for breaking and maximise her value (not worth anything to anyone other than me as she is OR running due to been so scruffy.
c) pull the engine out and see what damage has been done (will it be repairable cheaper than another engine.
Has anyone rebuilt one of these engines, what sort of cost parts only ?
What would be the likely things, i guess bottom end shells, bearings, oil pump, re grind the cank, maybe a re-bore, pistons and rings ?
I have been told the bottom end bearings are pressure fed and would be the first thing to suffer lack of oil, is it possible that the bore and pistons will have survived, unlikely me thinks, experience tells me its the top end to suffer first.
To top it off, i am skint, well as good as, business is really tight and although we are still going it is really on the line, i would not be able to afford a shiny new truck if i wanted one, so would be looking at prob 2k to replace her, no money really is it, and i have a feeling i would only find an old dog with more problems that i didnt know for that money, at least i know my truck, warts and all.
Also less than three weeks ago she flew through an mot, needed an number plate bulb and an advisory the front pads were getting low.
As you can see i am sitting on the fence with what to do at the mo, so asking a few opinions and hopefully find the best way forward.

PS, i may end up breaking her so anyone looking for parts for a 2.5 dse........... she does have some good bits on her lol.
