Hi again guys

This time I want to pick your brains for some information about the p38 automatic gearbox.

I know I have an issue with my current transfer case, I bought a 2nd hand one and I brought it to a local specialist. That was 2 month ago and I’m getting a bit impatient.

In the meanwhile my car started to develop what looks like a noisy torque converter.
Also when the gearbox oil is really hot there is like an imbalance which makes my engine shake. And there is some noise coming from the tc area.

I ran my engine hot on idle and non the above happens. So it’s coming from the drivetrain.

Which brings me to the following. I would consider to replace the gearbox at the same time as the transfer case.

I’ve been looking around and there is a local breaker who has quite a few of them on stock. Alternatively there is a breaker in the uk who advertises on eBay. The one on eBay claims that it’s a zf4hp24 that fits the diesel.

I know after some reading that the -65 later gearbox has infact the same housing as the zf4hp22.
I could not find however if the oil pump needs to be changed for the diesel bel housing.

Anyways what would be the best course of action on a budget?

1. Take my gearbox out and have it rebuilt
2. Buy another one from a breaker and hope it goes well

Import from uk is expensive, I looked for the Ashcroft transfer case but the total cost without installation was already 2000€.
That would be 3000€ at least for the gearbox+duties.

Concerning the transfer case, are they all the same Borg Warner for each engine type?

I will give my 2c worth.

The HP24 was never fitted to the diesel, so becareful.
The Transfer boxs are all the same as far as I know.

Now do you have somebody close who you trust to rebuild the box +suppy TC?
Would a secondhand box from a breaker give you time to give yours a good rebuild?

Yes this is true after a certain age/number the physical gearbox size is the same, as they were both fitted to the V8, the 22 went with the 4.0 and Diesel, but the 24 only went in the 4.6 so would be the same bellhousing, But the 24 bellhousing wont fit the Diesel.

The one on eBay claims that it’s a zf4hp24 that fits the diesel.

Now its possible to put 24 internals into a 22 so ask the question.
But I am pretty sure all 24 were controled electronically, so that said. Is yours electronically controlled (you didnt mention age of car but I thinkthey are) would it be a straight swap?

So many question and combinations so tred carefully, and check if a garenteed good box is worth the import hassle 🤔.

Early and late HP24 boxes can be fitted to the diesel using the diesel bell housing. Later HP24's use the same case as the HP 22 and both have a spacer between the auto box and the transfer box to make them the same length as the early HP24.
The early HP24 does not have the spacer due to it's longer length.
On some HP24's the oil pump needs to be changed to an HP22 one, on others it's the same but I do not have details.
The HP22 ECU will operate the HP24 with no changes. I think when talking to Mark about it I got confused with the numbers, a penalty of old age.

I totally agree and understand, box length and bellhousing differences.
But to risk buying a 24 which fits a diesel has to be questioned.

But I would question changing the 24s oil pump for a 22 as I was under the impression the 24 needs a bit more pressure/volume for the bigger clutches. Hence the extra length as it has a bigger pump.

If the electronics are a straight swap, that’s good. But I suspect it has some differences.

As far as I'm aware the pump is the same only the drive is different. T

Before you change the box, follow the advice if henry b and tighten all the bolts on the valve block. It fixed the problem on mine.

THE hp 24 will fit but u need to change the bell housing and torque converter
you could also try using the Lucas gearbox fix

ok thanks for the input guys.

A lot of things to consider, i didn't think about the electronics.

In the meantime I went looking at another p38 for spares :) guess I got the bug.
Not good enough to restore because it needs welding but it is the same year car as mine with more or less the same interior.

It is completely original with 330kkm on the clock and has a working engine electronics becm etc

I might take of the transfer case and put it on mine until I got the one back from the specialist.

@Datatek YOu talked about the screws in the valve body is that somewhere documented here on the forum?

Screws on the valve body, no documentation, just drop the sump, look up and there they are, lots of them. many were loose on mine, tightening them all eliminated the flare on shifts problem I had.

A P38 that needs welding ?
It sat for long time, then after it was stored in a shed. At first glance the door sills at the back and in the front have rust holes and 1 wheel arch. But then again it is not for restoring only to recover some parts because it’s the same year as mine.
