My friend just got a ticket for that, when a truck that was turning left
decided he really meant right. Needless to say, my friend was passing him on
the right, and the truck hit him. My friend got the ticket, even though the
driver was driving with a Mexican drivers license and was an illegal.

I've owned several FWD vehicles manufactured on three continents and
firmly believe the much touted superiority of FWD is a product of the
SAAB marketing, with little basis in fact.

Do not confuse AWD with advanced traction control systems. AWD simply
means you are in 4WD all the time. One of your gripes with SUVs is
their waste fo resources, i.e. gasoline, and yet you laud AWD which to
drive all four wheels on dry pavememnt increases the load on your
engine, thereby needlessly burning more gasoline, as opossed to my 4WD
which I need to engage, well, when I need to.

With your ignorance of traffic laws combined with your winning
personality, I don't think there's really any question who is more
likely to get the ticket.

Hey did you know that often a minority of BMW drivers are not BMW owners
? :)

Interesting - you neglected height - one of the biggest problems with
those "cars". Why not calculate the center of gravity while you're at
it - if you can.

Are you one of those folks who thinks that anyone who says anything
negative about SUVs is a "sandal wearing goof"?

It's not my fault you chose a ****ty car for your daily driver. My car
doesn't place me in mortal danger, and I get 30+ mpg on the highway.

I don't work in the ghetto either.

A car that doesn't endanger me or other drivers, nor one which
contributes disproportionately to pollution, traffic, or highway costs.

Many of the same things that are wrong with SUVs

And yet you seem embarrassed to identify it.

Well, not exactly. Since the early '80s and Audi's introduction of
the Quattro, 4WD and AWD have become acronyms for two distinctly
different things.

'4WD' now generally refers to vehicles that either: 1) go from 2WD to
lock all wheels together rotationally, with no differential effect at
all; or (incorrectly, IMO) 2) go from 2WD mode to an AWD mode when
switched or shifted to do so.

'AWD' generally refers to vehicles that are: 1) *always* driven by all
wheels with varying differential action between the various sets of
them; or 2) usually driven by 2 wheels but automatically and
transparently shift into an AWD mode of some kind when needed; or 3)
as above, a vehicle operable in 2WD mode and shifted into an AWD mode
that can be used all the time with differential action between the
wheels.

If you can support a *measurable* and statistically *significant*
difference in economy between a modern AWD *automobile* (not SUV)
drivetrain and its 2WD counterpart, I'd like to see it. Maybe I'll
convince my wife to sell the Jag (AWD X-Type) ... yeah, right.

No. Not until you tell us what *you* drive so we can make fun of it.

Omigod, that's got to be the funniest reply in usenet history!!! -Dave

Why is it relavant that this was an SUV? It could have just as easily been a
sedan or a mini van.

My 330xi gets about 1mpg less than a 330i. Part of the difference
is higher-ratio diffs to maintain acceleration performance.

Our AWD Grand Caravan also gets about 1mpg less than a non-AWD
van.

The writer would not been able to paint a picture of an SUV barreling
across a sandy beach hunting for unsuspecting sunbathers had it been a
Honda Odyssey driving around the parking lot. In fact I bet if it was a
minivan or car it would not have made the news.

Admittedly I don't know all the facts from this skimpy article, but I
find it interesting that the officer in his case wasn't charged (they
never are), but the woman will be.

If that had been a cop in the SUV, there'd be no charges there either
I'm sure. Cops never do anything wrong.

What's annoying is when they park in the COMPACT spaces.

I was a passenger in a Toyota Land Bruiser once and the driver squeezed
into a space meant for compacts. There was no way the driver next to
him was getting back into his car unless he crawled through the sunroof.
I "joked" to him that his car was hardly a compact and he replied,
without irony, "I don't want to have to walk." (The compact spaces were
a little closer to the store.)

Keep in mind this guy belongs to a health club and forks out several
hundred dollars a month to run on a high-tech treadmill in designer
shorts while MSNBC plays over his head. But he can't walk one extra row
of spaces to the supermarket.
