Why yes you did; evidently you missed the item our local station did
while attempting to bash SUV's. A mother backed over her kid in the
driveway so the "investigative reporter" did an "in depth" test of blind
spots. Oops. So which had the deepest rearward blind spot? Obviously
not the sedan. Must have been the Ford Excursion right? ENNNH, but
thank you for playing. The Aerostar mini-van had a blind spot to the
rear while backing nearly 30%, that's right, 30 PERCENT deeper than the
Excursion.

Now, I am not saying the Excur' is not a needlessly bloated beast; of
course it is. I am simply on the side of objectivity, since we have
never seen a small car tailgating, slaloming lanes, speeding in the slow
lane, dawdling in the fast lane, talking on the cell phone, putting on
make-up, etc., etc., etc. God I do hate sounding like the NRA, but it
is the driver, not the vehicle who is the asshole.

I own a first generation 4Runner (1/4 ton pick-up w/ carpeted bed, fold
down rear seats, and a cap). Because I drive a fire engine for a
living, I don't get snow days. Furthermore, as a homeowner I haul 4x8
sheets from the store and trash to the dump, & when on vacation, MY SUV
does in fact go off road, AND I STAY on existing trails.

Woman who ran over sunbather has been charged

The Associated Press

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. --
The driver of a sport utility vehicle who drove over a sunbather on the
beach earlier this week has been charged with a traffic violation.

Tiffany Knapp, 30, of Ormond Beach, was ticketed for illegal backing,
Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Joe Wooden said Friday. The maximum
fine is $72, he said.

Knapp backed her SUV over 52-year-old Glenda Willits, also of Ormond Beach,
on Wednesday afternoon as Willits slept in a folding chair.

Knapp "said the sun was in her eyes and she didn't see her," Wooden said.

Willits is in stable condition at Halifax Medical Center.

A call to Knapp's last known phone number went unanswered Friday.

----------------------

Apparently the blind spot of the SUV was not a factor.

From another news story..

"Cars are allowed on many Florida beaches, including Ormond Beach. "

"In February, a police officer drove over two sisters on Miami's South
Beach, killing one and injuring the other. The officer was not charged, but
the women's family sued the city for negligence. "

So apparently even police are not immune to such errors.

OK, run over a person, get fined $72 (or less). I'll remember that the next
time someone really ****es me off and I see them walking down the
treet. -Dave

Try that in court after running over someone in the street. "Yes
judge, I did see that person laying in the street, and I figured they
deserved it."

That's the criminal penalty, which by the way proves fault. The civil case will
be for a _ lot _ more _ money.

Yes. That is for illegal backing. It assesses fault for a breach of driving
protocol. It is hardly the last word. As this was not a criminal case but a
case of driver error, the penalties are not really a reflection of the
consequnces. The civil liability is not yet settled, and will center around
any negligence that can be assessed.

I'm sure that anyone that knows you goes around in fear of your stupidity,
avoiding eye contact and moving to the other side of the street, but
remember that the criminal act of running over someone deliberately is not
the same as the accidental act from carelessness.

Clogging up traffic for one. How many times have you seen backed-up
traffic caused by one of these imbeciles not being able to maneuver
past a car turning left?

You're under the mis-impression that SUVs are somehow different from
minivans - they're both oversized pieces of crap which cause too many
problems.

I forgot to add this to my previous post. My wife, tired of relying on
my 4WD on snowy days, wanted one of her own. After driving it for a
couple of days she developed some concerns regarding its size relative
to her previous car.

I got out my tape measure to prove to her the obvious: excluding
height, her '98 4Runner is in NO dimension (length, width, wheelbase,
track) more than 2 inches larger than her '91 Honda Accord 4-door.

But then I guess that makes a 24 mpg (city) sedan a bloated road hog as
well, hmmm? Or are you just one of those sandal wearing goofs who
disapprove of any mode of transportation not human powered? By the way,
my daily driver is getting 30+ mpg while placing me in mortal danger if
I collide with anything larger than a shopping cart. Makes for an
exhilarating commute into the ghetto.

What do you drive?

In any case no soccer mom was driving a 5000 pound SUV in sand and
actually making forward progress, this whole story is quite suspect.

Talking reason to the hypocritical greenies will only make their heads
swell larger. As it is they have already had to migrate from their
econo compacts into econo mid sized cars just to cart this massive heads
around.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

They need cars that big to haul around all the cans of gasoline and matches they
use to torch Hummer dealerships and luxury homes under construction in the
foothills...

That's the penalty for an act of carelessness. Hopefully by the time Gelenda
Willits' lawyer gets done, "Tiffany," won't be able to pay attention or any
thing else.

"View obstructing height" means the obesities _obstruct_ everyone else's
view.

So what? Most of the "minivans" are behemoths as well. Straw.

One of those "wide load" vehicles has a 3,000,000,000% deeper blind spot
than my '01 GTi. And it's not an Excursion. What does this mean??? :)

An SUV is far more dangerous when used in such a manner than an
automobile. Height, weight and bumper placement just to name a few.
Now here's a quiz for ya.

Would you rather be hit from behind at 50mph by:

A.) The space shuttle.
B.) A tractor trailer.
C.) A mobile home.
D.) An SUV
E.) A Golf that has the safe feature of 'crush zones' that absorb energy
of which is beneficial to both vehicles in an accident unlike any of the
forementioned.
F.) An asteroid.

>God I do hate sounding like the NRA, but it is
>the driver, not the vehicle who is the asshole.

It's both. Review my list again. And besides your analogy does not
work. Suppose I decided to by a gun at Bob's sporting goods. Even
though I'm ignorant for the most part of firearms, I'm not an imbecile.
I tell Bob that a handgun for home protection is my interest. Bob shows
me the new VW 9mm GTi. It's lightweight, nimble, accurate, has
excellent safety features, grips like a glove and has a ***** rating
from the NRA. Cost some hundreds of dollars. Then Bob shows me the
Ford 666cal. executioner OJ Simpson signature model. It weighs 50lbs.,
awkward and clumsy, inaccurate, has no safety, grips like a mitten and
has a NRA rating of 1/2 *. Costs 30% more.

That's funny, I navigated 2+ feet of snow in my FWD VW last winter
without too much trouble. Of course I drove at the proper speed for
conditions. The only trouble I did have was assholes in SUV's
tailgating me as well as the accidents cause by dolts in SUV's who in
error think they can drive and stop faster than a car in a blizzard.
Ever see an SUV spin like a top on its roof?

Besides, AWD is superior than 4WD by far. I'll take a VW with quattro
or a Suburu over any SUV in the rain or snow. Even if the SUV has AWD.

Okay, so your the 1 out 1,000,000,000,000 SUV owners that use the
vehicle for its intended purpose. A truck, not a car. Good for you.
The others transport soccer balls and trendoids to the mall.

Oh, so YOU'RE the guy. Can't count the number of times I've been backed up
by traffic (for MINUTES at a time) by some imbecile who refuses to pass
somebody turning left, even when there's plenty of room to do so. Even many
honking horns won't get some of these morons to MOVE. Yeah, in some cases
it may be illegal to pass on the right. It's also illegal to impede the
flow of traffic. Guess what will get you a ticket faster? -Dave

Keith,

You into generalizing a lot? I think people who drive VWs are worst assholes
than those driving SUVs. Oh, did you know that VW is the preferred car
driven by homosexuals (Beatle being number one, and Jetta close second), oh
and 80% of people driving Volvos are democrats. We can keep going and
generalizing a lot of habits. Oh yeah, people that drive pickup trucks are
all red necks, right?

What would you be ok with us driving, Keith? A Mini Cooper?? Would that
satisfy you?

Can I just butt in here for a moment to point out that the overwhelming majority
of BMW drivers are selfish assholes?

Thank you.
