Dual Odyssey batteries for split charge system

One of the guys at Nene Overland advised using dual odyssey batteries in a split charge system?

Has anyone done this? Is it really better than say a optima red and yellow top?

They would theyre like HOW much money!!

Red Top Yellow top Oddessy all of em lots of money and not alot of real time justification for them

Numax Do have high CCA as they are measured at 0 degrees (marine spec) and normal car batteries at -17.5 or sumthing like that but I can tell you I have had twin numax and a split charge all ok for 4 years. I know of 10 otherpeople running numax either split or std and no problems. I can list more than a handful of failed optimas and a few oddesy ones

Mate of mine fitted dual Odyssey batteries to run his fridge, lights, water pump etc on his overlander, he raved and raved about how good they were.

I bought Numax for 1/3 the price and have had no issues ;)
 
My money is most definatly numax I run 2x 1000CCA and i think circa 85A or 95 cant remember off my head and tis too cold to check¬!
 
I have two similar to this but got them a few years ago now so I guess this is the new model.

You can just about squeeze two into a defender battery tray!
 
You can buy a relay pretty cheaply check out start relays for a cheap 70A jobbie but Tmax for a few quid extra is all in a box less hassel. I stydied electronics and even designed a little circuit but in the end i just paid £60 and fitted it. Think my circuit is kicking about here somewhere tho

One final question, will the numax handle really low temps? Off to Norway this summer and then the Himalayas the following winter?

Is there anything special I should do to the battery box to deal with these kind of low temperatures?

Given where you are going I would actually be tempted to go for the Odyssey batteries.

I have recently replaced a numax with an odyssey and the odyssey is a much better battery, but then it is more than twice the price.

If it was just for UK use I would say stick with the Numax or even just a 'single' Odyddey battery, but given what you are doing I wouldn't skimp.

The reason I changed my Numax was because after about 2 or 3 years, it would loose its charge quickly on cold frosty nights and then in the morning I'd have a flat battery.

As for the Optima batteries, they used to be good, but as I understand it they changed to a different manufacturering plant somewhere in Mexico and ever since there have been lots of problems with Optima batteries.

Maybe I should invest then. It's really important they work in the cold.

Shame everything is so bloody expensive!
 
I'd invest in insulating the battery which ever you go for I would never never buy oddesy or optima in a million years.
 
Optima redtop for starting and a Numax for the aux through a Tmax split charge.

And I'm very happy with that setup

New Red Top is £100.

Why wouldn't you? it's £20.

Problem is in the last couple of years there have been a lot of issues with Optima (Red and Yellow), the older batteries seem fine but the new ones are not good. There has been a lot of discussion about it on here and other forums and the general concensus from those who have purchased new optima's is to avoid them.

I understand that a couple of the 4x4 retailers have also stopped stocking them because of the problems with them.
 
Even the old ones my old mans boss brought one of each new about 7 years ago within 2 years they were in the works skip he fitted a varta one in the end and as far as I know its done 5 years no problems every day and been to the africa no probs.
