Problem is in the last couple of years there have been a lot of issues with Optima (Red and Yellow), the older batteries seem fine but the new ones are not good. There has been a lot of discussion about it on here and other forums and the general concensus from those who have purchased new optima's is to avoid them.

I understand that a couple of the 4x4 retailers have also stopped stocking them because of the problems with them.

hmm, will have to keep an eye on mine then... no problems yet and it has to start a 300tdi with no glow plugs, after it's sat flashing the indicators every 15 minutes (just to say hi) with no problems at all... so... so far so good

Fingers crossed, I'm sure it can't affect every battery and most of the failures seem to be early failures within the first few months, so if your is older than this you may be OK :D

Nunmax seem to cost about £80 from a very quick google search.

New Red Top is £100.

Why wouldn't you? it's £20.

Because at the time I bought it had the red top and the Numax on it. I added the tmax as it was a home made system before that was not very good.

I'd invest in insulating the battery which ever you go for I would never never buy oddesy or optima in a million years.

Stupid question, how do I insulate the battery? Is there some special insulation you should use or could I just cut up old army roll matts?

D

roll mats are closed cell foam and very very good at insulating. you Must not block the bottom holes as the battery compartment must be vented so fumes can vent.

are roll mats flammable?

The question was asked when a chap the other week used roll mats to insulate his fender cab. Is it not a fire risk? insurance?

Im not trying to (excuse the pun) **** on your fire but surely it would be a risk if roll mats are indeed flammable?

Get the fire and chemical resistant ones should lessen the risk. Or use a fibreglass blanket

That's a good point. I assume the are flammable, I've set one alight with a gas stove before.

Do the vent holes have to be completely unobstructed. With two batteries in the 90's battery box it's going to a squeeze, should I drill new holes?
