Discovery 1 fuel tank guard fitting question

As per the circled eyelets in the pic below (pic taken from a Google search) can anybody please tell me where the hell these attach to, as they certainly don't line up with anything obvious on the chassis on my D1.

Hi Mark,

The fuel tank guards I know, and the design that I am currently working in secure to the two fixings that the towbar uses which are on the underside of the chassis.

Could these two points go to the back of the rear shock mounts?nthats the only thing I can think of.

Anyhow not the greatest design to have something that secures so far back.

sorry i cant help !!!!! but nice bit of kit . where did you get it ? i do like the idea of detachable tow bar as i tow the caravan with mine to .

Same thing going through my head. I've not seen one like that before,mine mounts same as towbar and everyone I've seen does the same.

It was an eBay bargain from the summer and is EXACTLY as per this eBay listing:

I just cannot for the life of me figure out where those eyelets attach to.

Greenhornet - Thought you might have been onto something there, but having just been out and checked, the measurement from the point at which the jate rings pass through the gaps in the sides of the guard itself to the eyelets is 19", so don't come anywhere near the shock mounts.

Unless their expecting you to drill the chassis? Thats an odd one.

Edit-does yours still have the holes for where you would fit jate rings. If so the rear holes are of no use. They might be there just to make it easier to build it.

That's what I thought. I even messaged one of the 2 sellers selling this exact item on eBay, but he was adamant that the vehicle needs no drilling or modification.

If it fits the same as The one I had the it's the towbar bolts on the rear crossmember and the Lashing eye brackets that sit underthe chassis rails. Where the normal restraining stays on the Disco Plough normally go.

Yeah you've got the correct holes plus two extra that aren't needed

I wouldn't worry about them.

Yup, I see what you're saying and that would hold it in place, but there would seem to be a hell of a lot of unsecured metal sitting between the rear of the lashing points and the rear of the guard itself after you've fitted it in the places you've mentioned, as these things weigh an absolute tonne.

So it just seems like a very bad design then?

The mounting points are strong enough enough to take a beating.Mine been fine and one its job many times. Heres some pics when I fitted,you can just make out that mine doesn't have the front holes.I used some heavy duty front bumper bolts aswell

Might sound bit stupid but could they attatch to where anti roll bar should be.if removed.

I thought that at one point but the hole is way too small. Literally just big enough to get a bolt through.

Doesnt seller know how it fit.make some of your own holes. Then it will be real secure.

ask the seller or as above drill some new ones

if I was making a guard I'd have it fit to all the old tow points, not necessarily on the guard itself as it might be neater to use some extensions on the side in order to get it fitting more snug against the tank in the first place then have two bars with holes for the chassis points

There are two big holes in the chassis which would line up with those holes, however, they don't go all the way through the chassis, and they don't have threads in or anything useful. They are also quite large so you would struggle to put a rivnut or similar in them. (good entry point for waxoyl though!)

It would be a tank out job to get to the holes though.
