It was a piece of cake. It comes with a piece of sponge and you just dab it on. I gave the wheel a good clean with some tesco leather wipes first. The instructions say it takes a couple of hours to dry and to do several thin coats. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I need to do another coat, but it looked ok to me after one coat.
 
Has anyone tried these instructions for removing the dash? I'm wondering if that would be easier than trying to do it the shortcut way.

It could be rain water or o rings, make sure you know which, very different solutions. I've been putting together a guide for o ring replacement, should finish it next week when back at work. No the dash removal isn't required!
 
I'll have a taste tonight then! Where is the rain water coming from? I've read about the AC drains & O rings as causes, but not rainwater. I suppose it has been very wet recently, certainly the wettest it has been since I've owned it.

So this thing is done up TIGHT. My chain wrench broke trying to undo it. There's a 22mm nut on the bottom of the new one but no way my 22mm spanner will fit in there with room to turn it. Think ill have to unbolt the pump itself and as it looks like its about to start raining I think I'll save that fun for the weekend.

It can't be that tight! De- pressurise 30 pumps then unscrew with an oil filter remover metal ring type remember righty tighty lety loosey:)

The bit that the chain hooks on to just pivoted before the accumulator came free. Are you suggesting one like this instead?

It really can't be that tight size of the dome compaired to the small thread size out ways the load . All your should be doing on a re tighten Is nip it up to seal the oring .i suspect cheap tools being the downfall or not doing lefty loosey
 
Of course I'm turning it the right way! :p My old chain wrench was cheap, but then so are the alternatives that are being suggested. I'll get a new one and have another go.
 
Right, got my new chain wrench this morning and with it the accumulator swap was a 10 minute job. I now only get the pump running every 3 or 4 brake applications. I must admit I was hoping this would have a bigger effect on the braking and make the pedal more responsive but apart from the pump running less I can't feel a difference.

Today I also attempted to replace my heater matrix o rings. This did not go to plan though. I started stripping things down following the shortcut method from rangerovers.net. When it came to the point of drilling/cutting an access hole I went my own way, and trusty dremel in hand went at it! The result was this:

The pipes are readily accessible and the screw is reachable with a normal length screwdriver, so I was very happy with that. The problem was the screw would not budge, and in my attempts to remove it I rounded it off a bit as well. After contemplating drilling it out and breaking something in the process so it wouldn't go back together I chickened out and put it all back together. :(

It wasn't a total waste of time though as access to the pipes will be much quicker/easier next time, and while I had it all apart I also did this:

Thanks for the heads up odysseus, they do go well with my chrome door handles :D
 
If you can get enough access for a hammer, try an impact driver on the stubborn screw perhaps? Usually works for me and better that having to drill out!
