Hi mate

indeed they are , heads up if I may , plse ensure u don’t leave the towbar on as they can be nicked in less than 30 x seconds

there is also a recall with the risk of towbar coming loose, if u call ur local dealer and give them the reg number they will tell u if the recall has been done, some replaced the rear crossmember, others fitted a fixed towbar plate

I’ll try and find the recall for u
 
Land Rover only recommends the detachable tow bar for occasional light towing as the movement of the tow bar in the socket frets the metal away. Much better with the fixed option. Also if the car is automatic and it’s not towed before, the ecu needs instruction that it is towing otherwise it throws a gearbox overheat fault

Thanks guys, much apprecciated, i'm trying to help a friend who doesnt speak english and somebody nicked the tow hook... didnt they make some aftermarket version which can be retrofitted using the existing holes ?
 
Thanks, i'll advise him to go for that one cos he tows often not occasionally, will this fit without any mods in the bumper?
I kept my removable to hook, because I can't stand those ugly things sticking out the back, brusing my ankles as I go to the boot, when it's not being used.

LR replaced my rear cross member and the tow hook with a shiny new one, all FOC, as I refused to have the non removable type fitted, which was their first offer.

I have been told by traffic officer that land rover only cover the detachable tow hook for up to 650kg. More is not allowed and was actually a traffic offence. Anyone know if that is true, as traffic officer should know?

I would say ta is talking out of his arse, car can tow 3.5 ton, as can all the full size LRs.
 
Previous thread says land rover say too much use damages towing point, so is this your opinion or can you confirm as fact. I know they tow 3500kg, but is the towing point rated for continuous use without reinforcing.

My opinion matters little, it was initially designed for 3.5 ton, and I think you will find it was only heavy commercial users who had issues, ie plant trailers etc, caravans wont be to much of an issue.
If worried buy the version with extra bars, though be aware it still fits into the same detachable socket on the rear cross member, just has the two bars to stop fore and aft wear.
Mine has a bolt on plate that mechanically holds the tow ball into the socket, but I only tow once every blue moon.

I have bought a Disco 3 to replace my freelander 1. After towing from Devon up to Scotland, Wales, and several round Cornwall I decided to upgrade. Caravan is 1600kg so close to the 2000kg freelander1 limit. I was unaware of any limits for the swan neck sold with every Disco 3, and understandably confused how they could be sold if not up to the required strength to last when used according to the supposed ability.
