Hi, I wonder if someone could help me find the cause to a noise I'm hearing when driving.

I think this could be two separate things to be honest.

1st - When moving off, once at around 1500 rpm I hear a vibrating 'scraping' noise, and feel a light vibration through the pedals and footwell floor. Its loud enough that I can hear it whilst driving, and its a bit off putting... Ive only really heard it recently.

2nd - I've researched this one by googling 'defender clunk' and it may be familiar to someone on here. I have a loud clunk when moving off (sometimes) and when changing gear at low speeds, I just thought it was normal for a while and tried to make my gear changes smoother, yet the clunk appears sometimes nonetheless. I have checked to see if its the UJ's (don't think they're the issue) I have checked for play in the propshafts:

Firstly, handbrake on out of gear - play in front prop, not loads just a little rotational play, no play in UJ's (no play in rear obviously)

Secondly, hand brake off, out of gear, play in both front and rear.

Thirdly, 1st gear, handbrake off - no play at all in either front or rear prop-shafts - absolutely nothing.

I researched and came across a Youtube video. link -

He found that the rear half shafts needed replacing. I have steels on my defender so can access the dust caps to the half shafts easily. I popped the rear ones off and found a reddy brown dust on them, similar to the video but not greasy, just dry dust. The front had no dust, and were clean as a whistle.

My question is, could I have the same issue and the fella in the video? rear half shafts need replacement?

By the way it's a 2013 Defender 90.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Many thanks!

My son has a 110 puma and I hate the transmission on it !!! It also clunks like yours and the previous owner spent hundreds on new half shafts, drive flanges, etc and it still clunks. I personaly think the clunk is either coming from the gearbox or worn imput shaft going into the transfer box.

I do think that sometimes it depends on how you're driving it and how smooth you're on the clutch. I think one with no issues at all can be clunky and noisy when not allowing the clutch to load properly!

they do suffer from gear box output shaft spline wear, eventual loss of drive

If you have to drive like that it's because you have a problem ! I have a 200tdi 110 and also a TD5 110 and neither have any play in transmission !! Well they do but not enough to clunk or have to drive it in a way that would prevent any clunking !!
But as for my son's Puma it is terrible !!! And as James said I think that it's the output splines

My son's Puma clunks when you let the clutch up in gear with brakes on which determined for me with my head underneath looking for play that it must be in the gearbox. If you Google it Pumas are well known for it !

Oh okay thats good to know, thanks!

Do you know how expensive the replacement would be if I were to got to a garage?
My thinking was that, after watching the video I linked, I have noticed I have the same symptoms (red dust, with tiny bits of metal in my dust cap) that it could therefore be the half shafts?...

Sorry James I mean you don't suspect the half shafts then for my Defender, not for Jasons sons defender? Mine have not been changed. Cheers

Also, when I say smooth on the clutch, I don't mean super careful, just not using it as a ON/OFF switch like you could get away with in a ford fiesta for example.

Does anyone have any ideas what the vibration sounding noise might be when moving off? its a scraping rotating rumbly noise only happens with accelerator down, whilst moving.... once put to speed its smooth and no noise. Just 2 or 3 noises then nothing whilst going up the gears.
