2.2 puma Defender exhaust

Right then troops, This has probably been asked before, but I can't find anything, so here goes. The centre exhaust silencer (2012 110 2.2 Defender) is on it's last legs but hasn't failed yet, but when I have to replace it I can guarantee the back end of the front pipe will turn to dust around the join. The question then, is how do I avoid having to buy a new front pipe complete with the DPF, which is mega bucks, when I replace the rest of the system. Does someone now make a system where the front pipe is able to be removed from the DPF without having to replace the whole thing. Probably not, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

If it has a bolt together flange you could cut the flange off and use a sleeve.

Did mine a year or so ago, same year as yours. Like yours the mid section silencer was past its best but still useable. It was the original item. Before I got stuck into the job I checked what was available in case of the rear section and DPF end flanges disintegrating. If I remember right, you can get sleeved flange pieces to slip over and clamp to the pipe and match the flange on the mid section - eBay is the place to search. When I did the job, the nuts for the rear flange (on the old mid section) were seriously corroded and had to be hacksawed off. The flange on the back box pipe was still solid but a bit corroded on the mating surface of the flange, a good slather of exhaust goo sorted that. The nuts for the front end of the mid section came off fairly easily (prepared with a release oil) and the flange on the DPF part was still in great condition. A few years ago there were lots of new take-off parts from new defenders which were being Chelsea tractored, which filtered down the food chain as sell-offs. I managed to get a new mid section silencer and put it on the shelf - that's the one I used. Cost me £90, compared to the current price of the genuine item north of £250. If you can find one, at a reasonable cost, go for it - or a stainless one. My original lasted 12 years and still had life in it when I took it off, aftermarket ones have a bad rep for only lasting 18 months.
