Hi, I wonder if someone could help me find the cause to a noise I'm hearing when driving.
I think this could be two separate things to be honest.
1st - When moving off, once at around 1500 rpm I hear a vibrating 'scraping' noise, and feel a light vibration through the pedals and footwell floor. Its loud enough that I can hear it whilst driving, and its a bit off putting... Ive only really heard it recently.
2nd - I've researched this one by googling 'defender clunk' and it may be familiar to someone on here. I have a loud clunk when moving off (sometimes) and when changing gear at low speeds, I just thought it was normal for a while and tried to make my gear changes smoother, yet the clunk appears sometimes nonetheless. I have checked to see if its the UJ's (don't think they're the issue) I have checked for play in the propshafts:
Firstly, handbrake on out of gear - play in front prop, not loads just a little rotational play, no play in UJ's (no play in rear obviously)
Secondly, hand brake off, out of gear, play in both front and rear.
Thirdly, 1st gear, handbrake off - no play at all in either front or rear prop-shafts - absolutely nothing.
I researched and came across a Youtube video. link -
He found that the rear half shafts needed replacing. I have steels on my defender so can access the dust caps to the half shafts easily. I popped the rear ones off and found a reddy brown dust on them, similar to the video but not greasy, just dry dust. The front had no dust, and were clean as a whistle.
My question is, could I have the same issue and the fella in the video? rear half shafts need replacement?
By the way it's a 2013 Defender 90.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Many thanks!
