Does anyone else have plugs? @Range rover dt

Do not bung it up.
Many moons ago my, then father in law wizard mechanic genius, told me to drop and change oil in my defender front diff. In my youthful ignorance - no matter how much I poured in it ran out that hole. When I took it back to show him there ‘was bung missing’ he creased up laughing “you’ve poured it in the bell housing and contaminated your clutch you nutter :D“ He said it’s supposed to be there as drain if you go wading etc

OK. Fitted the friction and pressure plate and then went back to the fork. Seized again!

I've freed it off and had a closer look. The fit in the first bush is not good. It seems very loose, all in all. Plus the oil seal looks worn. I think there is enough movement that all grease is pushed out. The gap is then big enough for dust to get in or water to wick in and then it forms a paste and gums up. The bushes are available from Rimmer Bros at a silly price. Each has a flange and looks like they need pressing from the inside outwards? Maybe find a socket / washer and press them out? Anyone done this? @jamesmartin maybe?

just had a look at my spare , the lever end Bush looks like it pushes from the outside in, the other bush is covered by a cup type core plug it looks like a plain bush,i.e. flangeless, they seem to be made of a type of plastic. Hope that helps, pity you wern't closer you could have used my spare.

Just to clarify, you did mean me when you said ‘Range rover dt’?

If it was me, yes.

Tomcat. The smaller bush far end of fork is brass, or looks it on mine. The closest the pivot point is steel. Then there's a cup in the end of the lever to accept the pushrod - that looks pretty darn warn as well but cannot see it being an issue. If I f*ck this up I'll pay the postage!

Bit of an issue here. The parts on RimmerBros all say V8. Are the diesel bushes the same?

Hah!

My Auto can take double the torque the manual can :D:p:cool:
For half as long

look how many auto box problems here weekly. Not seen one manual issue (other than odd clutch which is part of maintenance at this age) in my short time here? My transfer box is like an auto box - dodgy. Wouldn’t necessarily say no to auto though, just personal preference, I got a big boy license for 3pedals ;)

The Manual P38 is a minority.

and the early L322 is the RR with gearbox issues, planned obsolecense.

Just look in the 'fender section at the R380's that drop like flies ;)

The 4hp24 rarely has issues unless neglected.

I like the idea but if Grrrr has committed to buying new clutch it’s too late. No one will stop him now not even the Doris :)
If I ever do it you will have to come and help me

I’m only 5ft 10” :eek::cool:;)

i'm only 6ft1 only 3 inches in it ;) :D

Ya'll be alright. ;)

Can't stop the Grrrr when he gets going ;)

Would have thought R380 specific?

I’d check with @Datatek 1st if I were you

Think both of Data's are autos. Wammers is the parts guru, although I bet James Martin knows.

Still coming up a blank on the diesel. I daren't knock these old ones out until I am certain I have replacements. I get the feeling removal might be a bit catastrophic.

Incidentally, my old Defender had a hell of a life and the clutch and gearbox took everything. And it did a lot of towing and off roading. Only real issue was the ignition switch and the starter motor.

And the rot ;)
