Ok chaps, can some of you explain brush guards, winch bumpers to me?
I may be looking at swapping the 'pedestrian friendly' soft A bar thing for a brush guard. Nothing too massive, but enough to offer some more protection and hopefully stop any scrotes from taking my headlights.
I'm a little bewildered at the choices tbh, I don't want/need a winch, and something I can keep the factory bumpers

Getting a "brush" guard, what I would call a bull bar.

I cannot recall ever seeing a full bar that covers the headlights on a D2, that still had the original bumper in this country . Iirc there was some law about bull bars put in place , so new cars never had them fitted.

I am sure some more knowledgeable person will be along shortly ref the legality, I understand it is not illegal to have one, but the vehicle manufacturers cannot fit them or some crap like that

I personally do not like them , seen the wrap around ones get hooked up on too much crap, My Old Man had one on his 90, one of the beasts bent it backwards once, it was a POC.

As @neilly has said, there was a law put in place some time back, it refers to the age of the vehicle as to what can be mounted on the front, what the manufacturer can and cannot fit, what an owner can and cannot fit and also what is classed as a "bull-bar" or a "Roo-bar" and what is a "soft nudge bar".
Consequently, as with all legislation which the government tries to make simple has turned into a bit of a "can of worms". I suppose it could all be just called a grey area.
I have security bars on my lights which everybody says are no good because they can be cut with bolt croppers, but I've yet to see some spotty 'erbet with his hood pulled up hanging around on a street corner with a pair of 12 or 14 inch bolt croppers sticking out of the a*se pocket of his jeans.

I've also looked at the plastic headlight 'protectors' which are held on with self tappers, meaning you have to drill the wings and nothing to stop the scabby oxygen thief from nicking as well as your headlights?

Yeah pretty much.......................

Is yours a FL D2?.......you can always fit the headlight security bars.

If you do a search you may find something , but it is not common.

I've looked at the security bars, the only ones for sale are Jaw eng'?
Erm, a little steep price wise for what they are......?

You are, only as long as they are not made of steel. 'A' bars and wrapround protection bars were a listed LR accessory for the 2004MY D2s. Nether of the two items will protect head lamps, although lamp guards could to a certain extent.
 
OK,

Well basically I made mine from 5mm steel bar, contoured to fit the headlamp profile , welded an M6 caphead on the end. I drilled a 6.5mm hole in the headlamp / bonnet slam panel . Then bolted the headlight guard thru.

Cool, that makes sense, what does the lower part fit into?
 
The lower part, which is at the top of the pic, sits behind the bumper.

The NS is different because of the washer fluid bottle. It haa an angle to place the rod at 45 degrees to the outside edge.

All it does is make like a little more difficult to the guy trying to steal the lights, hopefuly they will move on. I have seen pics where someone still tried to remove the lights with bars like this in place, They failed, but it was a mess.

The ones made by @neilly are very similar to the ones which I bought. The general shape is the same but the method of fitting at the top differs. With mine, one of the bolts which holds the headlight unit at the top end is replaced with a longer bolt so that it will accommodate a spacer and a welded on eye. Mine are made of a hard stainless steel and I just gave them a coat of matching paint with a touch-up pot. They make no difference at all to the job of changing a bulb, I've got to remove that bolt anyway to get to the bulb holders.
If the villain is really determined, no amount of add on security will stop him. He's just as likely to use a Hiab to lift the car onto a flatbed. All you can do is hope to slow him down and make him think twice then go look for another target.
