A few stupid questions :D

It’s been a few years since I did anything major with the Defender, so

1. What are the metal trims between the body and the tub called on for sale sites

2. I’m just about to order a galvanised chassis but suddenly thought about the chassis number. Do you get your old one put on the new chassis or does it involve a ton of forms for the DVLA, insurance etc.

Anyone who’s done a chassis know what else is likely to be broken/ worn out. It’s a 200tdi, mostly original except for a few minor off road mods

Oh and in case you remember me, I will NOT be doing the work

You can't transfer a chassis number from one chassis to another

that's the whole point of chassis numbers

Oh OK, never done anything like this. Can it keep its reg. no. Or does it become a different vehicle

Yes it can keep the reg number.

Some cut out the dumb iron with the chassis number, and keep as proof then cut the rest up and weigh in.

So it’s legal to give it a new number. Do I have to do anything besides tell the DVLA and my insurance ?

Why give it a new number and tell the DVLA?? I suspect that a new chassis number will result in loss of the registration number, and possibly a Q plate. On the basis that the chassis number - being the same as the VIN number - is the vehicles identity. You need to be sure about this before you stamp your new chassis.

Don’t stamp a new number in. Your vin number will suffice
(You can put some numbers on the chassis side for your own security)

Just inform insurance you have had the chassis changed & provide details of the garage

I would not tell the insurance or anyone else the chassis has been charged, why would you?
I think you will be asking for trouble, just keep all receipts and photographic evidence.
My son goes on another forum where a member had his Defender stolen and quickly recovered by the police. They would not release it until he could prove what it was as it had a replacement chassis with no chassis number on it.

As the chassis is galvanised it means landrover did not build this.
You can replace the chassis legally and inform them, some want an engineers report.
With a new galv chassis you increase the value so payout would be better, yep you will incurs initial extra charges.

As for my chassis it has markings on chassis/bulkhead before galvanisation & if these were removed it would show up.

My insurance company specifically asked if my 90 has a galvanised chassis. It increases the value of the vehicle and potentially the desirability and theft risk of it. I would disclose it so that in the event that it is stolen then you are able to get the true value of the vehicle paid out.
