Sounds like it's the best defender for road use. Do you need the smile surgically removed everytime you drive it?

No - I just leave it there. My wife is beginning to think I am playing away!!!!!!

One of the dads at my daughter's school has a bright orange Lambo and there are loads of Porsches, Rangies, fast Audis etc, but the boys in my daughter's year (year 5) voted our landie as the coolest car in the school.

Second was Mr Hammond's 1963 Austin Healey sprite.

The lamborghini was described as 'totally vulgar' by one lad!

Result!

Haha, result indeed!

See, anything old or custom wins over off the shelf expensive super cars everytime.

Something you can go to a shop and buy off the shelf is just too easy, thus, not cool!

I really want to build a big block land rover. Just need to source a budget first. I was thinking bmw v10.

Snowman - totally wrong option - small cylinder volume - 50cc - equals no Torque - only reason the BMW V10 engine has 500 bhp is that it revs to 8250 rpm - but it is gutless below 4000 - not ideal in a landrover.

6.3 litre chevy 383 small block is the only way to go - huge torque from 1000 rpm.

Weighs the same as a 300 tdi and as the same size as a rover V8

You can go Chevy Big Block but it is MUCH bigger and heavier and will wreck any handling aspirations you may have had.

Yep, big block Chevy is a huge beast and is only any cop for straight line action.

Small block motors really are a good option, as victor has demonstrated :D

I would like to slam a disco and more than likely convert to rwd I know I'll get flamed for saying that. It would be a hotrod over an OEM ish vehicle such as yours. it's all elementary as I already have a 1970 chevy chevelle waiting to come over from the us. I'll be an old man before that's finished.

Yeah its a good deal too. My mates cousin was rebuilding a chevelle coupe into an SS rep but got hold of an SS in much better condition really cheap. So when my mate asked how much he wanted he said I could have it free if I paid to ship it :-D. Engine transmission running gear rebuilt and spot on. Body need alot of work and interior is present but had been a rat home for a few years lol. Oh it comes with a complete ss engine in spares all bar 1 or 2 he kept for his new gen SS

I wonder, if you converted to RWD, would you get rid of the transfer case and fit a RWD box?

You have problems with the engine not being central nor the diff,
Or would you look at centralising the engine in the chassis and modding the axle?

You could get equal length shafts made.

Going on the BMW v10 idea, I would use the M5 box and rear diff having custom prop and drive shafts made to go from M5 diff to RRS hubs using uprated versions of the RRS brakes to handle the power/weight. I haven't really looked a lot into it as it is a case of "if I didn't have the Chevelle". I think I would already be modifying the chassis to rebuild the suspension to allow for a slammed discovery and moving the petrol tank as the plastic tank a couple of inches off the floor worries me a bit. I would with the budget I'd be looking at to build such a discovery have the funds to twin turbo the V10 so would more than likely need to strengthen the chassis aswell. That's kinda the reason I got the Chevelle a lot cheaper than a charger and can still see 750WHP on about $6000.

Is the best place to get Chevy small blocks flebay usa? Looked at a half built twin turbo rover 3.5 on ebay but not got the budget atm.

Best place to get small block chevy is ebay UK - they come up all the time.

Edelbrock have a distributor here (RoadcraftUK) and real steel can provide all sorts of stuff as can john wolfe racing.

Real Steal also do heavy work like stroking, re-bores etc. etc.

partsworld peformance, part of GM, provide a Turnkey 350 SBC with 365 bhp and 410 lbs of grunt for 4600 including Vat - just add fuel line, engine mounts, exhaust and oil and connect starter cable.
