Hi all, with my defender came a raptor console with empty spaces for a cb radio, 2 x cig lighters and 3 x 52mm gauges.

Is there a recommended site for buying these and if so what do you recommend?

I was going to move the clock to centre and in its place a rev counter, alongside the clock I'd have oil pressure and maybe battery voltage? Is that the best thing to do?

Stack, Delphi, VDO all do lovely gauges

Voltmeter, oil temp, boost all important.

If its a TD5 the rev gauge will be a fortune,if not itll be cheap!

I've heard this said before on here and I always wonder about the logic. If these guages were important, why don't more cars have them. I have had dozens of cars over the years but very few have had an oil temp guage or a boost guage, in fact none have. Don't get me wrong, I love a nice set of guages but you might as well have an altimeter as well. My landy only has an oil pressure guage, and that reads Zero pressure half the time, bit disconcerting the first time it dropped. The only two extra guages I would like are a tachometer and a clock.

Spoiled sport! Coz its fun! :p

In all fairness having a boost gauge as helped me a few times in finding boost leaks and a couple when hoses blew off. Without the gauge I wouldnt have known that quickly.

Fair enough. I'm not against having an array of different gauges, I think if installed well, they look cool. I'm just questioning the importance of them. I had a Lancia Beta Coupe, that had a lot of gauges and I spent more time looking at them than looking out of the windscreen.

Because most sheeple are too stupid to use them, and also because they cost money - often quite serious money - like a tachometer for a TD5  - a durite "ordinary" tacho is towards £100......

But, they are very definitely worth having

I have a temperature gauge on my ATF - under heavy towing - you can see the temperature rise, and thus its easy to ease off when appropriate....

£100? Behave. They are at least £250

Its more down to seeing whats actually going on and being able to know "i wont go flat out here" or having a few seconds heads up before something goes wrong, could be the difference on breaking down on the hard shoulder or lane 3.

Sorry - didn't explain that very well  - a wet fish has been applied to the back of me head :D

By ordinary I meant one for a 300Tdi etc - I.E. standard "W" terminal driven one - not TD5 compatible, which I know are silly money .....

+1. :)

While not strictly necessary, having more information about the health of your engine or how hard it's working can help you drive and maintain it so that it lasts longer. Most people (not the people on here obviously) are too stupid/uneducated to understand what to do with the information - hence the "there was a little red light on for ages before the engine failed" punter that garages see every day.

Lane 3? Lol

I still disagree to a certain extent apart from fuel and temp of coolant. There are usually plenty of little telltale signs of an imminent problem if your not listening to Deff Leopard at full volume. My landy broke down a couple of weeks ago but I knew it was unwell for a few minutes before the inevitable and all without the aid of a gauge.
