I've another technical question.
How do the gudgeon pins work on these pistons?
I can see on the picture on the Turners web site that there are circlips. Presumably to go in the sides of the piston. Are the gudgeon pins an interference fit on the con rods? ie, does one or the other need to be heated or cooled.
Now that was a pointless question. It's just occurred to me that I'll find out when I take the old ones off!:oops::oops:

Yep, greyhair, that's typical of me. Over thinking things and worrying about what might go wrong. Having said that, it'll be a right faff on if they have to be heated on.

Some gear arrived to day. I wanted the new valves for when I drop the head and block off, but got a few other bits when I was on to spread the spend out a bit. Head bolts, bearing shells and a few other bits.

Got a quote for the injector refurbishment at £276 inc VAT for the set of 4. Quoted genuine Bosch nozzles and set to original specs. Seems expensive to me and so I'll be looking at the ones @Disco1BFG posted the link to. I told them I could buy a set of reconditioned Bosch ones for £175, but he said that was the best price they could do.

Blimey - me too!! that's a bit of a difference! I'll try and get round to speaking to my local guy - see what he says.....:)

The cynic in me also wonders about the availability of genuine nozzles too - given the lack of availability of ERR3337 - #4 injector on the EDC 300's. ( which is why I got rid of EDC )

Have you tried diesel bob?

Good shout! His reputation is rather good !! ( he's on my list for my "spares", if the local guy can't do em ):)

He actually offered to make me a #4 injector, from scratch.... but the price was, er..... silly - he even agreed with that too.... :)

The Bosch ERR3339 injectors for the standard 300Tdi seem to be readily available, so the nozzles must be? I'm just emailing LR Centre about those injectors.

I know the name is legendary, but never had any contact. If I Google diesel bob, will I find a contact? :)

Hopefully true - Doesn't stop me being cynical tho :D:D:D - I've edited my post above cos I put the wrong part number in  #4 is ERR3337 - IIRC, which, frankly I probably don't :D:rolleyes:

yes should do
give me a sec will dig my paperwork out when he did mine
Champion, cheers. :)

Ha, ha, memory like mine then. ERR3339 is the standard injector which you posted the link for. How many miles have you done on the ones you got from LR Centre?

Great service from both

that was to have mine rebuilt
Champion. I've been on his site and it states from £35 per unit to recondition injectors of that type. I'll give him a bell tomorrow.
The ones LR Centre are selling seem quite cheap relative to the costs I'm finding.

Thanks to Aaron, I've got the crank pulley bolt off. Came off no bother with the proper tool!

Having a tea break to contemplate taking the belt off. Having learnt from @Saint.V8 and @Disco1BFG about not moving the FIP on the casing. My bottle has gone to just whip the belt off
Will I be setting all the pulleys, crank, cam etc from scratch or do I need to reference anything, stick a bolt through Fip pulley for example?

Diesel Bob came back with a price for the injectors £42 +VAT each = £201.00 inc VAT (that's not with Bosch nozzles, but ones he recommends)
LR Centre came back about the ones they sell at £175.00 inc VAT to say they were original Bosch injectors reconditioned to original spec
What would you do? :)

just whip the belt off ,timing a 300 tdi is simple just dont undo the center nut on the injection pump

Cheers, James.
Obviously everything will be coming off as the block is going for machining. So as long as injection pump centre nut isn't loosened everything else can just come off?

dont forget to remove oil squirts
I've seen those in the darkness! Yeah, they are right under the cylinder where the machining will happen. I'll take a picture so I get the angle right when I put them back.
Thanks again! :)
Sun's out here anorl. Glorious weather and stripping an engine, doesn't get much better than that!

Well, you know what I did ! - and my reasoning was:-

A new nozzle from a reputable supplier is a new nozzle - same applies to the setup. I'd certainly trust Diesel Bob, and to the extent necessary, I trust LR Center not to sell me a POS. I have never heard of a catastrophic failure of a conventional injector nozzle, (I.E. NOT common rail ) - so I don't believe any proprietary brand is better than any other. Any such failure would be all over the web rather quickly, and the supplier could be held to account quite well, I think.

I did do a search on this and all the documents I saw relate to common rail injector failures - I have attached a report. The conclusion is essentially that poor fuel quality at extreme pressures ( in common rail Injectors ) can cause cavitation, erosion and fatigue cracking.
Since I don't have anything common rail, then I'm not worried.
