Got an oil pump for the bonneville engine I am rebuilding, off the bay. An original item, cost 5 sovs. Compared to unbranded repros at 70 sovs or branded for 120+ sovs. Modern ones made with brass bodies, originals in bronze. Checked with a micrometer on the moving parts, perfect. Could see a bit of muck on one of the non return valves, took it apart for cleaning - the muck was a tiny blob of old gasket goo, easily flushed out. Will finish cleaning it and put it back together this afternoon.

Would not a yellow/amber indicator bulb do then?
I am sure you have looked into this deeply and whatever the problem is the solution isn't easy, or you would have solved it.

For the last kit car I am supposed to be building, I bought a pair of P80 headlamps. They are exactly right for the car, but they are so old, that their dipping mechanism is to switch the offside one off and mechanically move the whole reflector, bulbholder etc down and to the left, with a solenoid. so there was no way I was going to be able to pass the MOT like that, as this was pre SVA this was all I needed to register it.

So I got hold of some Volvo sealed beam units that would fit inside the P80s and spent ages converting it all to fit. It worked and the P80s still looked like P80s so I was happy.

Since then I met a bloke with a real Jag SS100, and we talked about this issue. In his case he owned an engineering company (he had so many old Jags it was unreal!) so he was able to get his staff to take the back out of each reflector and spin metal up etc until they would take modern two filament bulbs. A much neater solution. I suppose I could still do that, but I have so much more to do on the car that this will have to wait.

This is why many owners/builders of 30s style kit cars fit aftermarket headlights, the sort you can get for Lotus seven copies, where they look like spotlights and keep the bigger ones for decoration. Provided they go where the regs say headlights have to go, they are OK.

So I do understand the problems one can have.

Replica Owleye rear lights are a heck of a price. He had two, so used them for indicators and rear/brake lights. I could not afford that so I got one, to act as fog, reverse and number plate light, and two others of a different type for the indicators and rear/brake lights.

Sorry I've not kept up with things of late, been a bit preoccupied with a load of stuff, starting with a break-in which was a bit of a shock because they prized the iron bars off a window.

Also had the (W's) car serviced which for ease meant we went out in two cars to deposit and collect, which has thrown up some faults on my car which I've been spending some time on. I've been aware for a while that the nearside dip headlight isn't working because a connector has melted off so for now avoid driving in the dark! Also aware there is a petrol leak because it stinks but last week realised it is leaving a trail on the ground.... at least I can trace it easily now.

Also noticed its running hot, rich and pinking a bit at times so looking into a new O2 sensor as a first port of call, I think it got fried when there was unburnt petrol entering the exhaust a while back. Replacement is looking cheap but fiddly and difficult to access.

Had a thunderclap headache today, the full works. I get migraines from time to time but this was unusual. Mrs 6pot checked my blood pressure, she has one of those machines and checks hers a lot due to certain medications - she was jealous that mine registered 115/74 with pulse 58 so that was some good news at least!

Had a bit of time this weekend to do some minor jobs on the Landie and hoping to get through a few more before having a look at the brakes soon.
