How much does it smoke and when ?. A chugg of smoke will be normal on a remapped TD5 just before it comes on boost. My TD5 used to black smoke quite heavily on boost, ( especially when cold ), and this was down to a poor remap.

Its worth checking ALL the earthing points as this can cause problems. There's the main one from the battery and then a couple in front of the air box and then one or two in the passenger foot well under the slabs and bcu units.

You wont have the diff lock !. If you had it and the cable was siezed yoy you would still have a small amount of left/right slack in the lever. ( just the same as the forward/backwards slack ). Has it got H-N-L stamped o the top of the gear knob ?.

Be prepared to find that you probably haven't got the linkage or the difflock hardware in the transfer box.

Does your high/low lever sit back and to the right, rather than more central ?. Dont be fooled by the information sticker on the consol. If your high/low knob has the diff lock function embossed in it, then it probably has it, and as James says, the cable may be siezed.
