When looking for a discovery 2 I ideally wanted one with the option of linking up the centre diff lock but wasn't exactly sure of what age of motor to be looking for. So I thought a poll would be a good idea for anyone who might be in the same situation. Plus I always wanted to start a poll :p

Forgot to say, please only vote if you have a diff lock mechanism fitted.

TC is AWESOME! But I was glad of the fact that I could manually engage myself :p ;) with a 10 mm spanner on the spigot on top of the transfer box when it took a dump ...even though I had to receive a tow up the rest of the lane! :D

by doing that you disable tc unless you remove switch wires

Are you sure ?.

Engaging centre diff lock on the D2 causes the traction controll to work at a reduced parameter. SLABS ecu,s on later cars enabled the TC to work as normal. ( as well as omotting audible " bongs " on engagement and dissengagement ).

Have I missunderstood your post ?.
 
Mine is a 54 plate. One of the last to be made, so should have it, but I'm buggered if I can get it to engage.

My theory is that the last few were "Frankenstien" cars that came off the line with whatever was left lying around. Hence I have a box sans CDL.

I'm a bit miffed about that. Also it must be one of the few Landmarks without ACE. A bit miffed about that too, but at least it's one less expensive thing to go wrong.
 
In 5 years I've never felt the need for a locking centre differential.

It's in there, but I'm dammed if I see the point of adding mechanical control. LR engineered Traction Control which does an excellent job, and I just don't see the need for anything else.

There was a later SLABS ECU that allowed CDL operation without upsetting the HDC etc etc, on early ones you need to fit a switch so the diff lock light switch doesn't signal the SLABS ECU, but then you need to remember that the diff lock IS engaged.

The D2s traction controll is a very capable system indeed, however, the only subject that is asked about more than, " has my discovery got centre diff lock ", is, " my discovery has the 3 amigos ". There is modifications that can be done to the ABS modulator to help address the 3 amigos problem. Mechanical locking of the front and rear prop shafts definately aids forward motion together with TC in certain conditions.

Does your high/low lever sit back and to the right, rather than more central ?. Dont be fooled by the information sticker on the consol. If your high/low knob has the diff lock function embossed in it, then it probably has it, and as James says, the cable may be siezed.

Up to you - it would make engaging the difflock easier should the TC take a dump whilst off roading, or you lose a differential or propshaft, but assuming you can get under the Disco then it's relatively straightforward using a spanner.
 
James and 50p, thanks for the information. There is a sticker on the console that suggests a diff lock, but the lever sits to the right and back (high ratio engaged) and simply has L-N-R embossed on the knob.

I am off work next week and will be doing work on the car, so will check for any seized cables etc.

Be prepared to find that you probably haven't got the linkage or the difflock hardware in the transfer box.
