Having re-read your post the thing your describing is a drain hole for any excess fluid that leaks into the gearbox bell-housing, supposed to be plugged only when wading in deep water. If it was your gearbox fluid drain plug you'd know about it as your gearbox would probably now be seized...

Its pretty much impossible to do without taking both the gearbox and tranny off together as the bolts are too difficult to get at and it'd be a knightmare trying to line the two back up afterwards. The plumbers idea could work certainly. But if i were you id take both hoses to a Pirtek type place and ask them to make you a new one up with the fittings you want on. Won't be very expensive either, probably less than £10 and you get a new hose you know isn't going to leak!!! cheers tom
