    No spark at plugs?!

The gap on a spark plug is quite narrow & not a reliable test that you have enough HT. It would be better to take the king lead from the coil & hold the end of it 5mm from an earthing point. I can get a spark of 10mm but less than 5mm you have low HT. You need to test the rotor arm, you cannot...

    Military Service History Check

If you have the ERM (Equipment Registration Mark ie the military registration) enter it without any spaces to see if RLC Museum have the record card for it. ie 58 FL 21 enter as 58FL21 http://www.rlcarchive.org/VehicleSrch

    Paint mixed with sand ??

Could be, although unusual in a 'B' Vehicle. There is a gritty non-slip walkway paint intended for the top surfaces of certain 'A' Vehicles & SPGs. It is available in matt NATO Green IRR & gloss NATO Green non-IRR.

    Lucas or Ducelier distributor

Yes there are essentially two elements to the ballast resistor. I have done some experiments of the performance of them on here: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?53479-Bright-Sparks-Latest-Update

    101 gs colour code??

I was really meaning the era you wanted to represent rather than the date of manufacture as there are basically three possibilities, BSC381C No.224 Deep bronze green BSC381C No.298 Olive drab BSC381C No.285 NATO Green If you are wanting to represent 1974 that rules out NATO Green. It would have...

Question for owners of ex MOD Land Rovers

Both my Wolf & Shorland are Light 4x4 Utility, my Pig is a Box Van & my Shorland prototype was also a Box Van. Sorry I know nothing about TFL, I live over 200 miles away. Is it not a question of whether it is petrol or diesel that is the deciding factor?

DBG & NATO Green - The Story!

This is something that has fascinated me for over 30 years, but it has proved very difficult to find, let alone untangle, tangible evidence from fading memories, misunderstandings & general misinformation. This tells the story of the interactions of finance, politics, strategic requirements...

    Screened & unscreened ignition systems

If you want to simply do away with the screened ignition system and retain the 24v working. Then fit a normal distributor, leads & plugs. Ideally retain the 10v coil & filter box (contains ballast resistor but this is not the same value of resistance used in cars). This has the advantage that...

Series 3 Can I keep standard voltage dropper for 109FFR or need a new one?

You will not find an off the shelf 24v to 12v dropper. The issue of using replacement droppers & 12v coils is covered on pages 87-89 of this: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?53479-Bright-Sparks-Latest-Update

    Series 3 have I missed anything? Converting 24v to 12v (FFR S3)

You will need a voltage stabiliser for the instruments, these were not used in 24v Rovers. Years ago Brooklyn Engineering in Hampshire used to do free 24v to 12v conversions, such was the value of 24v components for export.

Series 3 What are these (distributor bits and fuel system)?

There is some info on the screened ignition system here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ngxlc9rvolb124l/BRIGHT%20SPARKS%20FOR%20LAND%20ROVER%20v1.03.pdf?dl=0

Series 2 Is duck egg blue actually green?

If you are trying to emulate the colour used on MOD engines "duck egg blue" is a misnomer. The correct colour is BSC381C No.101 Sky Blue.

    Screened & unscreened ignition systems

Although originally written for problem solving in the Land Rover screened ignition system, there is a lot of information common to non-screened systems in other types of vehicles. There are now sections listing a large number of Lucas coils & how they are coded & how they are expected to...

SERIES 3 WONT START , FULL LIST OF WHAT IVE TRIED!

Just because you can see a spark at the plugs doesn't mean you will have a spark under compression. More HT is needed to create a spark in the engine due to the gas density (related to compression & mixture) in air less voltage is needed to get a spark. If you disconnect the king lead to the...

Series 3 Intermittent fault with indicators... any ideas??

Oh yes there will always be something else waiting to happen. Maybe once this problem if fixed for certain do a bit of prodding & checking similar connections to be one step ahead!

Series 3 Intermittent fault with indicators... any ideas??

Yes that's the job. I just asked as I have a particular interest in the ignition & charging on 24v systems.

Series 3 Intermittent fault with indicators... any ideas??

Well spotted. It certainly needs fixing & may well be the cause of the trouble. Just out of interest is it 12 or 24v?

Series 3 Intermittent fault with indicators... any ideas??

PS These are super meters for the price. Quality seems good, accurate & not too small, has buzzer & a 10 amp range which many smaller meters both analogue & digital do not have. Much as I like my Avo 12 it is a bit bulky, so I carry the Maplin one around in the vehicle. I was so impressed I...

Series 3 Intermittent fault with indicators... any ideas??

The diagram is an amplification of one of many diagrams here: http://www.land-rover-lightweight.co.uk/lrl%20k.html When you get a multimeter get one with a buzzer for continuity tests. Most these days are digital I much prefer a moving coil multimeter. The problem with digitals is that they draw...
