how do you know it goes into gear ?? are you using the regular gear lever or selecting directly at the box ?? need an expert to chime in and say if there is 1 shaft that could cause this problem .................. seems odd anyway does it make funny noises in 1, 2, 3 or 4 ?

There are a few around us here in the centre of France but I guess that's cos it's sort of mountainous - 700 metres for us but the highest point in the area is around 1900 metres
