I have recently noticed a strange electrical buzzing noise while the ignition is on, It's very loud and have been ignoring it / drowning it out with music for a while.

It's coming from the Rear Drivers side wheel arch.. Or there abouts. Noise below in video.

Is this normal? Help greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply!
Is that an easy / cheap fix? Just searched up on it and sounds like it is the fuel pump.

when the pump does get noisier then I would be tempted to change it as I have just done as more noise than usual was coming from it but before I could do it, it stopped but I managed to get it going with a bump to the inner wheel arch which got me home I also changed the filter as well at the same time as it saves you stripping it down again.

My fuel pump started playing up just over a year ago, gradual fuel starvation until the car ground to a halt. My replacement fuel pump which is probably now out of warranty has started the loud electrical whine that you've described. I get a very occasional issue similar to the fuel starvation one I had previously so I've booked it back in to see if I can get the pump changed under warranty or goodwill.

re: the low pressure electric fuel pump ..
the original is made by Bosch ..
there are cheaper alternatives .. BUT ..
you more or less get what you pay for .. the cheaper ones tend to burn out sooner ..
( my original one was replaced at 76k miles )

+1 on that point

+1 on fuel pump and get the proper one. IIRC the 05 is pump in the wheel arch not the tank, and is easier to replace. Also fit new fuel filter at the same time.
(nearly typed fool filter: Oh! if only such a part existed!)

I've had two pumps go, both on 10 year old TD4 cars. So that's spot on for yours too.

A failed fuel pump is a tow home job, so don't mess around

SOMETIMES slamming the rear offside door gets em started again. Eventually it doesn't...

Bugger! Ok, I'll look into getting it sorted then. Doesn't look like something I would be able to do myself!

Thanks all!

Would something like this do the trick for mine?

Amazon product

Cant afford to spend any-more on it! Just treated the car to new discs and pads.

I had a look into fitting it myself but looks a little complicated removing cover under the rear seat etc.

But you say you don't have to do that on the 05 model?

It's not that tricky a job, hardest part maybe the fuel filter as they can get jammed in solid, mine was.

Sorry to sound like a total novice, but can you run through the process of removing the wheel arch plastic and replacing the pump?

slacken the wheel nuts then jack the car up take said wheel off then undo the front part of the wheel arch this will allow you to pull the inner wheel arch cover back and fold it behind the axel then you will see the pump and filter , there are a couple of bolts to take out I found the best way was to undo all including the ones that bolted into the chassis, then undo the pipes they are the squeeze and pull type, then pull the unit out ,I must say at this stage you should have taken pictures if you can not remember how it all was, then the 2 rivets should be drilled out to separate the cradle and unit ,then I got a socket and bar to push the filter and pump out and then reversal and put back and at this point I know I should have taken pictures ,but if you are cleaver enough do a search because somebody has already taken pictures, hope this helps

Hi, I think I have same problem with my 2005 freelander 1 td4, a buzzing electric noise, like a pump, or something who start with the engine, coming from rear right wheel.
Did you found out what was the problem?
Many Thanks!
Ionut

The responses are pretty specific and good. There's nothing else in that area to cause it.

Not replaced the pump just the filter but imo its not a big job to change the pump if I can do it anyone can trust me
