The original under wheel arch pump failed at 4 years and about 40k (from memory) I first of all fitted a non genuine one from euro car parts that lasted only 8 months and was very noisy. Now replaced with a Land Rover one that is now been on the car of 14 months

I guess it all depends on how far you want to travel, how long you want to wait and what is available in your area but the price is high for a 1.8 petrol. If you are happy with it then that is the main thing. They are not all bad though :) Good luck!

If the pump works with a bang and your electrical connection is good then it will be the pump failing. Mine has the later single pump under the drivers rear wheel arch and when it failed I initially replaced it with an after market pump that was noisy and only lasted 8 months before failing...

Does it change the exhaust note at all ?

Yes it does sound like the alternator, if you have a volt meter put it across the battery terminals with the engine running - you should be getting 14 volts

10 miles a day wont be much of an issue with fuel consumption, I do around 50 miles a day minimum in my 1998 1.8 Freelander and get 31 mpg, I would estimate high 30's with our TD4 but have never checked:rolleyes: If you have the budget for a 2004 1.8, that should be enough for an older TD4...

Wouldn't be a cam sensor if the starter motor is not working:)

Check the solenoid connection (small wire) to see if the contact is tight and clean, if all ok there it could we worn contacts inside the solenoid that makes the starter work intermittently.

Did the starter motor turn over the engine?

Is your wiring harness OK where it passes into the rear door ? since everything within the door is not working I am wondering if some wires have frayed

Only buy a 1.8 if its cheap, you don't do a high mileage and then budget for a head gasket replacement at some point :rolleyes: Ok I have a 1.8 but it was crazy cheap to buy and bizarrely been very reliable. As said above get the TD4 (from 2000 on) diesel or spend a bit less and get the earlier...

There was talk of changing the frequency of the MOT to every 2 years to fall in line with Europe - not heard if this is to be done or scrapped though

Yes it fits in place of the normal clock :) I must try and do a how-to at some point

I am happy with my Freelander 1.8 as well, served me well last winter and just back on the road for this winter again :)
