Hi all.

So, I bought my '05 TD4 Sport Premium about a month ago.
Major issue was a repetitive 'hum' / vibration at 50+ mph.

Thanks to some helpful types on this forum, I sorted out a couple of minor issues that I had initially.

Work carried out so far:
Oil / filter change (had no idea when last done).
VCU and bearings changed.
New tyres all round (over an inch larger diameter on the rears!).
BMW crankcase breather.

Not sure which of the VCU or tyres sorted the vibration, but it's gone! Did them together! Well, I've got peace of mind of new tyres for the winter, and a recon VCU.
Most of the above was carried out after reading the forum, so thanks to you all!

I'm thinking about a stereo upgrade next, but I might wait a bit.

Apart from the EGR blanking, any other ideas for standard mods?
Cheers!

I would be concerned that the rear Tyres are so much bigger than the front 5mm is the tolerance recommended - it could be putting strain on the diff hence the noise.

Sorry - not clear enough - I have replaced the tyres all round since there was previously a 1 inch diameter difference.
The rears were pretty good, actually, but I wanted to ensure it was all matching. (So I've got a couple of very good spares for the future!).

I'm pretty sure the mismatched tyres were the reason for the vibration / hum.
I changed the VCU as the car seemed to be 'winding up' (to use a phrase I've seen bandied about here) - 'difficult' to move in tight maneouveres, etc. Not entirely sure as obviously the mismatched tyres may have made a 'good' VCU act poorly.

All is now well.

And I have to say that having just completed my first drive to work since changing the Crankcase Breather for the BMW part - WOW, what a difference. I'm sure it's more than psychological - the car seems so much smoother!
I'll let you know if there's a perceived improvement in the mpg, later!

Thanks for the reply.
Strangely, I was doing some research on the Synergy 2 this morning.......

There's many convincing arguments to upgrade with the Pierburg (sp?) MAF as well.

I have that set up but I have an injector on its way out and boy dies the synergy show it up! I have had to switch it off until I have time to sort the Injector out.

Hi, thanks for the replies.
I've now done the EGR bypass and fitted a synergy 2 with Pierburg MAF - again, what a difference they've made.

On the first tank of fuel, I'm not seeing a lot of change in fuel efficiency, I don't think, but it's just made the car so much easier to drive, and it wants to rev!

Well done mate. :)
Join the club of modified / improved Freelanders.

The mods you mention make an unbelievable difference to the vehicle. I was never able to accelerate UP a hill before!! :D

Don't forget the fuel filter as a dirty one will impede the flow a bit.

Also the often forgotten little turbo solenoid vent filter thingy that Ian James mentioned.

You might have to wait a while until after you've stopped playing /enjoying your new-found power and performance to see an improvement in mpg.

Have you followed the thread on using 2-stroke oil?

Highly recommended.

Turbo diesels don't like a restricted exhaust system. I've found that removing the 'cat' internals vastly improves turbo response.
