Final straw, its going now, been nice knowing you all :)

I would collect all the bits together and examine them carefully. It would strengthen your claim if there is no evidence of rubbing. Better still if there is evidence of pre existing cracking in the metal. Think about getting an independent report done by a motor engineer to help pursue a...

    EKA - A little experiment

Yes my vin is in the form d-l-l-d-d-d-d-d-d. However the sum of the first 3 of the last 4 digits are not the last 2 digits of my key code! Your theory doesn't hold up because if the 3 digits in the vin where each 9 the maximum sum would be 27. So the last 2 digits in the EKA code could never...

    EKA - A little experiment

Doesn't work on mine. Also each character in the EKA code has to be between 1 and 6.

    Viscous fan coupling

The diesel shroud is in one piece and comes off with the fan. I did a mod. I cut the top off with a band saw to make it easier next time it comes off. I fabricated a couple of clips either side to hold the top bit in place. Works well.

    Viscous fan coupling

The bolts on the diesel viscous unit have domed heads and are difficult to get off. L/R obviously intended that you had to replace the whole thing with the fan. Put it in a vice and use a centre punch and/or mole wrench to loosen the bolts. I put the same bolts back in with loctite on the...

    Viscous fan coupling

The defender viscous coupling ERR2266 fits the p38 DSE. I know 'cos I've fitted it. The petrol p38 fan rotates the opposite way to a diesel so obviously is a different part. Dave :)

    Oil Type for P38 diesel?

The book says semi synthetic. Yet the main dealer where I bought my car from many years ago said they always use fully synthetic. There is a theory that fully synthetic is for modern close tolerance engines where there is a bigger gap between services. Also I've heard semi synthetic is better...

Rick-the-Pick wrote: Nearly but not quite. Not all EDC ECU's are the same. ERR 6114 are for autos, ERR 6113 for manuals. The one on my car is MSB 106370 which has a different plug! Dave :)

Not having a go at you mate. I respect the experience you have. Many years ago I was a vehicle mechanic in REME but not up todate with modern stuff. Just trying to get to the bottom of how security sync works and the peculiarities of the different diagnostic systems. Dave :)

    dhse ecu swap

I found this post on Rangerover.net by Collin the owner of Blackbox: I think this clarifies what happens. Dave

    dhse ecu swap

No, I haven't swapped EDC ECU's between cars - I only have one p38 thank god. The experts in this are Blackbox Solutions. I am using a Faultmate MSV2 and the software is very straight forward to use. I am guided by their help files and I go on their forum which is also a good source of information.

    wheel bearings

Hub bearings are classed as a "composite" so don't appear on any bearing lists.

Are you confusing the diesel EDC with the petrol gems?

    dhse ecu swap

Hmm. Using Faultmate I read the code in the EDM ECU and just write it into the BECM. Simple. Must have done it a dozen times this week trying out different maps. I don't do anything at all with security learn. What diagnostics are you using? Dave

    dhse ecu swap

Yes Irishrover. You are 100% correct in what you said. I thought Eightinavee was saying the diesel had to go through a security learn which it doesn't.

    dhse ecu swap

Some confusion here. Eightinavee wrote: The immobilisation code is fixed in the Bosch EDC ECU. The learn function doesn't apply to the p38 diesel. (I think gems does use security learn but we are talking about the diesel here. I don't have a gems). I have been testing several...

    dhse ecu swap

The immobilisation codes are different for each ECU. I know that for a fact. Some people have reported 4 digits, yet my original one was 3 digits long and I have a spare that is just one digit. Seems to be anything that the installer set originally, up to a maximum of 4 digits. Also I had my...

    Nudge bar removal

There are just two bolts underneath that screw into the crush cans. Easy job if the bolts come out. Nightmare if they are rusty and been on 10 years. Replace with stainless bolts (I think they are 10mm) and use copperslip on the threads. Nudge bar comes off with the bumper in one piece. There...

    Diesel Turbocharger Replacement

Found out it was a split pipe right on the turbo outlet! Who suggested that? Not happy with the turbo though. No play in the rotor but a lot of oil in the pipes. Was going to change it with a spare I've got but can't get at the inside bolt. Looks like the exhaust manifold has to come off...

    Diesel Turbocharger Replacement

Thanks for the replies guys. Have now sourced a spare p38 turbocharger that looks OK. Ordered new gaskets so planning to replace it later this week. Will report back on what I find. Dave :boom:
