The turbocharger on my 2000 DSE looks like it needs replacing and I am looking round for another one. It is marked TD04 - 11G - 4.

Does anyone know if p38 turbochargers are identical to BMW cars and Omegas with the M51 engine? Are they all the same?

:)

The symptoms are:

- Car lacks power (recent occurrence) - I have a chipped diesel.
- When I floor it, once over about 2500rpm it makes a horrible whooshing sound.
- Checked it with Faultmate. Turbo only giving out 167kpa at 3000 rpm.
- no sign of hoses or intercooler leaking
- Also although there has always been a certain amount of oil in the intercooler side, when I just checked it seems a lot worse.

The Whoosh could be the Viscous Fan locking up to enhance Cooling....

This also has the effect of sucking a noticable amount of power from the Engine...I was surprised...!!!

167kpa is 1.67bar or 24.2psi...considering the boost is supposed to be 1bar (1 atm or 14.7psi) the boost pressure is a little high...

Check the MAP pipe for signs of splits or gunge....

Also the Air Con compressor cutting in and out can sap engine power too....

Viscous fan is new. Not long done it. Whoosh noise comes on above certain revs, hot or cold.
167 Kpa I measured is absolute pressure not gauge pressure so is low.
As you say I should be seeing around 1 bar gauge or 200Kpa absolute.
Nothing wrong with the MAP pipe.
Aircon u/s at the minute so switched off (next job).

the turbo charger from the omega and bmw cars will not fit straight on the exhaust compressor housing is different. but you could use the cartridge and bolt it into your original range rover housings as the cartridge is the same ( central part of the turbo )

Thanks for the replies guys. Have now sourced a spare p38 turbocharger that looks OK.
Ordered new gaskets so planning to replace it later this week.
Will report back on what I find.

Found out it was a split pipe right on the turbo outlet! Who suggested that?
Not happy with the turbo though. No play in the rotor but a lot of oil in the pipes.
Was going to change it with a spare I've got but can't get at the inside bolt. Looks like the exhaust manifold has to come off. Left the original on and sounds sweet and goes well.

Oil in pipes is normal. Excess more likely to be oil separator in cam cover needs cleaning than turbo leaking.
