A friend of mine had his Defender 90 hardtop nicked, police visited and said 'cameras everywhere, we'll get it back'. They found it the next day, tested the tape holding the swapped number plate for DNA and arrested the scum about two weeks later. Prolific car thief. Result.

I wouldn't bother. I was thinking about taking the factory fit head liner out of mine. It traps condensation and dirt and looks ugly. I drew up a spec for what I wanted, late model hardtop 90 Tdi 300. It took me a year to find a good one. Don't rush into it, walk away from rust on the chassis.

Keep it original, less expense, less likely to be stolen, increase in value, no insurance hassles.

Why? Are you going to stand on the wings? The previous owner of my Defender fixed chequer plate to the wings and bonnet but I wish he hadn't. He used mastic. Grrrrr........

I had mine treated with Dinitrol and watched the process. It took about 6 hours and cost about £500. See their website, highly recommended.

Buy a new motor, I got a new one for £40, mine was rusted solid :-)

Have you told your insurance company that your Defender is in fact a caravan?
