Alternative to the fluid coupling (VCU)

Dont worry about the diameter differences using a spare tyre. Remember that changing one tyre means that the differential on that axle will average out the difference in diameter between the spare and the old tyre on the other side, so the actual difference in propshaft speed between front and...

Alternative to the fluid coupling (VCU)

Dont get me wrong - I genuinely respect what you have done. Im not sure how long you have read this forum before signing up, but once a month or so someone will come along with wild ideas and big plans to replace the VCU. 99% of the time they have no idea about the basic principals of...

Alternative to the fluid coupling (VCU)

Phew. Almost half way through June and we hadnt had the monthly "Im going to invent a replacement for the VCU" thread. You get huge respect from me for actually building the thing rather than just daydreaming it on here. I dont know whats inside your magic box...I assume some kind of dog box...

Freelander 1 any one tried these wheels and tyres?

 Pretty much every argument against retreads ever right there ^^^^ "I had them in the 60s and one delaminated boo hoo hoo" You know that was over FIFTY YEARS AGO, right? Also, you cant compare HGV tyres to car tyres. Truck tyres carry much heavier loads, do much higher mileages and...

Freelander 1 any one tried these wheels and tyres?

FFS its not 1974 anymore. Modern retreads are made to tight specifications and have to meet the same safety standards as new tyres.

Remove VCU and Not replace keeping 4wd??

I swear to Christ I am going to hunt down and murder the next **** who starts one of these threads. "Oh HAI, I have absolutely no idea about the basic principals of four wheel drive but I reckon I will design and build a replacement for the VCU....."

Freelander 1 VCU Dampering Ring coming off.

The damper is a heavy metal outer ring rubber bonded to the inner part which is bolted to the VCU. Cut the loose part off and bin it. No, you wont get vibrations. The silicone fluid will naturally balance the VCU as it rotates. Some VCUs are sold without the damper anyway.

Freelander 1 this is normal ?

Its a power steering hydraulic hose. All left hand drive Freelanders have the same flat spot, I dont know if UK ones are the same. Its normal, dont worry.

    Weird one?

Dont drive it. That belt also runs the water pump. Driving without the belt means coolant wont circulate and you risk cooking the engine - head gasket failure etc. Assuming you havent already. If it snapped when you stalled and you continued driving till the battery died, thats quite a long time...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Picked up a 2000 model Honda HRV my sister has bought. Got to be said - its a very nice drive. I know these have even more of a gayboy soft roader image than a freelander, but I really liked it. Full time all wheel drive apparently uses a clutch pack in the rear diff to disengage drive when not...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Pointless trying to change the seal on that one, the inner lip is broken so the new seal will slip out of place as you tighten it. Mine failed a few months back. Chuck that part number thats stamped on the plastic into ebay and there are hundreds of new ones for sale; the part seems to be common...

Freelander 1 LHD headlight fix ?

Depends on your headlights - Some need the top tab removed, some need all three. You need to rotate the bulb in its housing by about ten degrees, so that the section of beam that kicked up to the left on original RHD setting becomes flat. Do it in front of a wall at dusk to see what I mean...

    Freelander 1 Which Winch option....

I dont notice much handling difference, if any. Its an old Freelander on AT tyres, so turn-in is ever going to be pin sharp anyway, but this doesnt seems to have made much of a difference either way. You could save a lot of weight by using a synthetic rope rather than the steel cable. The cable...

    Freelander 1 Which Winch option....

A decent winch weighs nigh on 40 kgs - thats a lot of weight to lug about and line up with a receiver slot. Its also a lot of weight to have to securely strap down in the boot when not in use. Fit it permanantly and save yourself the hassle. This guy spent a lot of cash and built up a bracket...

Propshafts missing and few other problems

3rd freelander.... didnt check for a propshaft.... Thinks the VCU is going to be the expensive bit..... LMFAO.

What have you done to your Freelander today

The point where the strap will be attached sticks out a good 10 or 12 inches behind the points where the bar is bolted to the chassis. Thats an awful lot of leverage to bend the towbar. Chances are it will probably be fine, but there is also a real chance of damaging the towbar or even ripping...

TD4 problems after New Clutch fitted

Your problem is almost certainly hydraulic. You have a master cylinder on the bulkhead, connected to the pedal. This is the black plastic part with the small fluid reservoir. There is the pipe that leads from this which has a quick-release fitting in the middle of it. (black plastic pipe, the...

You are not planning on using that as a recovery point are you?

    Freelander 1 DIY TD4 Clutch

At the fuel filter/pump I think. Mine is under the bonnet rather than at the rear wheelarch on later models. Just a couple of quick-release connectors to unplug. I would imagine if you have the pump in the rear arch you could undo them from the HP pump and probably the return from the fuel cooler.

    Crane Mans Commercial

HDC was optional at that age. Mine is a 2001 commercial and has it. I am not aware of any differences for parts between it and a normal car apart from the obvious rear trim etc. Before you get all excited with the mods and upgrades, refit the prop and do the One Wheel Up test BEFORE you drive...
