Propshafts missing and few other problems

I just brought my 3rd Freelander and got caught out. It's a 2006 td4 5 door and I got a noise the other day so went underneath it and was shocked to find that the propshafts and vcu etc is missing. Is it a good idea and safe to drive it?? I am looking to get the parts for it but it's not cheap for the vcu coupling. Are the propshafts the same from a 98 to 2005 and 2006 etc....

Also when I turn the steering left there is a creaking noise which seems to be getting more noisy. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.
 
Also there is smoke when I first start it in the morning and it's very rough on idle and finally it is chugging (the way to describe it). Put stp engine cleaner in and it did nothing.
 
3rd freelander....
didnt check for a propshaft....
Thinks the VCU is going to be the expensive bit.....

LMFAO.
 
Thinking of buying a crashed Freelander to use as a donor car as never even thought it might have been removed because of a nother problem like the ird or rear diff. Thanks Mad Hat
 
Why you say that? And no I don't have a lot to learn, I got caught on this one but been my 3rd Freelander I already know a good bit about them. I just got done by a chancer and that's it.

i say that because this your third and yet you havent realised how import the VCU is and the implications if it is either tight or missing.
 
What they're getting at is that checking if the props are missing is probably the first thing you should do when looking at a Freelander. It only takes a couple of seconds and is the #1 issue with Freelander by a long long long long way.
 
Sorry, I need to explain better. When I went to look at the car it drove fine and the propshafts etc were there and all felt fine. However the car had to be re NCT'd and I would not buy it till it had gone through the test. I went up and brought it just after it had gone through the NCT and passed and no I did not re check the car as I did not feel I would have need to. I do understand how important the ird, diffs and vcu are as with my first Freelander I had looked into making it a 2WD but found out not to. By chance last week I am getting a noise from the steering wheel and when I went to look at the track rod end that was fixed for the nct I could see the front drive shaft in put but no drive shafts.
 
I have a good idea he did. Or who ever did the track rod end took him. I am very tempted to but really it's buyer beware at the end of the day. Plus don't need a criminal record cos of some you know what..... not worth it...
 
If it drove OK with the props on I can't understand why they were removed. From what I understand from previous threads on here, the props must be installed for the NCT - so they must have been installed to pass it. So why have they been removed? Did it need tyres for the NCT? So it failed the NCT on tyres, the seller put a couple of cheap tyres on, but it then drove like s**t so removed the props knowing the retest would only look at the tyres?

What ever, there is no way on earth I'd let the seller get away with this.

How long ago did you buy it? Is it possible they could have been stolen since you bought it?
 
I've gone back to a seller for less.
However if you really want to get it sorted, you'll need to find a decent prop and VCU. Or better still have the VCU reconditioned.
Only then will you get an idea of the condition of the IRD. You can drain the IRD oil and look for metal particles.
 
Thanks for all the advice so far. Best focus on the girlfriend now with the night that's in it as I am getting the dirty eye been on the phone. Thanks again and chat to ye tomorrow.
