I suffered a Run away diesel

Here we go again.....
Drive the 40 minute home, was great until the last 5 minutes when I came off the motorway. Clouds of white smoke again.
Here is a video link to see while it is idling.

That’s a downer, did you look at the cam lobes and followers for flat spots when it was stripped that could be quite noisy , has it got some side covers you can remove to look at some of the lobes,

I was going to remove all the followers but then I needed it done asap so skipped it. Probably a silly idea as that will be head off again. Although the smoke wouldn't come and go from followers... Would it.......?

Finally got my dial gauge rigged up to check the FIP lift timing.
It is spot on 1.4mm of lift at TDC.
So it must be either the injectors or the pump. I feel if it was the cam lobes it possibly wouldn't have just happened.
I'll get the 4 injectors sent off to diesel bob when I have the pennies...... :-(

Hi everyone, finally had the injectors tested today. One of them was dribbling all the time so that would cause the issue. They are replacing all 4 nozzles and setting them up to all open at the same pressure so they will be like new. Hopefully back in the road soon 🤔😁👍

Did put this in disco section but thought it might be more relevant here.....

Hi everyone, towing my daughter's horse from Folkestone to Gloucester. 40 mins from Gloucester on the A417 yesterday. I suffered a runaway. Black smoke and loss of power. Pulled over and as soon as I dipped the clutch it started. High revs. White smoke everywhere. I can't describe how much there was. Turned ignition off and managed to stall it in 5th. I'm guessing the extra weight of the trailer helped. I feel I managed it with in 20 seconds so I'm really hoping no damage to the engine. I won't know till I get the car back. RAC couldn't get it home with me so I got a hire car home, car will be delivered in 3 to 5 days time. Only just got it back on the road after loads of welding and lots of new stuff including a radiator, front and rear brakes, front bearings, a frame ball joint, track rod ends and lots of other little stuff. Really gutted. When I get the car back I'll see if my dash cam caught it.....
Anyone else had this and engine been okay?
James
I had this in my 110. It was a split in the boost diaphragm in the injector pump.

Got my injectors back. £281 for all four to be rebuilt with new nozzles and re shimmed to open at correct pressures. Done by a Bosch service centre.
All fitted and started and idles lovely. Not driven it yet due to one tyre being half flat. Judging by the sound and the smell I think is sorted the smoke. My only concern is a tapping noise. I thought it was from the injectors being bad but it's still there. It's cam speed so not bottom block. My only guess would be the followers as I did skip removing and inspecting them. Bummer really. You can hear it on the previous video.

This, you are not going to believe!!
Decided to bite the bullet and whip the head off to check the followers.
While doing do I thought hmmm, this rocker seems a bit dry ... Not much oil......
Finally got the head off to find the head gasket is sub standard and faulty.
Or maybe it's meant to be like that?
Check photos
What I believe to be the only oil way up to the rocker shaft?
Hopefully that will solve the tapping.
Followers look perfect. I've leak checked the valves with solvent and none leak. I will strip the rocker shaft and check at some point in the future seems it's been starved of oil.
Any one think of a possibility that the lack of oil could cause white smoke. I can't...lol
The mystery carries on IMG_20250401_120003256.jpgIMG_20250401_120008520.jpgIMG_20250401_120016700.jpg

Sounds like the oil feed to rocker shaft is same as 200tdi, via a machined flat on front cam bearing which pumps oil to rocker shaft, when i did my 200tdi in each rocker is 2 drillings that you can push standard size drill into ( can’t recall size) to ensure pathways clear.
Not a gasket expert but I used an Elring one which was good quality , do you suspect the tapping noise now the leaky gasket

I don't know how the oil gets to the head. Never been near the camshaft. I do know that there is one hole at the front left corner (cylinder 1) of the block which is above the camshaft. It passes through the head gasket and though a passage way at an angle up to the first bracket for the rocker shaft. It joins the bolt hole for it and goes up the bracket and then asking the shaft. From there it passes though holes into each rocker arm to lubricate the arm on the shaft, the push rod and finally the valve stem.
I'm almost sure that it is not receiving enough oil. I've got no more free time for a while now but I will strip the shaft and inspect. I don't believe the head gasket was leaking. I did think the hole on it was restricting the oil but after seeing photos it looks like they may well supposed to be like that. If that's the case then it must be something in the rocker assembly blocked. Not sure if any of this would cause white smoke though? Like I said. The followers/sliders look really good.
I reckon the tapping noise is the lack of oil. I'm not sure if the oil pump could be damaged with a run away but then. The oil light is extremely well behaved.........
