I suffered a Run away diesel

I did the head gasket about 18 months ago and it went there then.
If you remember at the beginning the timing had slipped a tooth maybe two on the fuel pump. I don't think that would have caused it. I suppose the over reving would. No marks on the pistons from a valve hitting but that doesn't mean it didn't.
Hence why I'm going to strip the head completely and check all the valves aren't sticking out something else. Pointless putting it back without checking.
I think the bent exhaust push rod maybe could cause the smoke? Only one bent is the strange thing.
I will check the others but that one was obvious....lol
Push rods bend before the valves do. You should be fine.
If you are taking the valves out are you doing the stem seals?

Yes, my last 300 belt snapped and that did about 6 push rods, not one damaged valve.
And yes, I am most definitely going to do the valve stem oil seals. (Elring hopefully)
I'm removing them just incase one has bent but unlikely being vertical to piston. Main thing is to check after the over revving there isn't any sticking πŸ‘πŸ‘

Well that's the head stripped.
No major problems really.
All valve stem oil seals had come off there seat so that would cause a problem. They were genuine elring but all very hard and brittle.
Oil in 1 and 2 exhaust ports but could be left over from the runaway?
Some of the valves had black spots on there sealing ring. Maybe the start of pitting?
I've ground all 8 in using my valve lapping tool and now no black spots.
Just need to organise a shopping list now πŸ‘πŸ‘

Hi all, well, it's been a long 4 months repairing it.
In-between work and other stuff but I believe it is now fixed. After stripping the head it looks like it was all eight valve stem oil seals. I've had the pistons out and back in and the head off and back in. Has a slight knock just when you take up the throttle from idle gently. After a phone conversation with James Martin I believe he is correct that it is the vacuum pump so not really anything to REALLY worry about. Can't drive it at the mo as it now has a terrible steering wheel wobble. Looks like the front nearside tyre has gone out of shape while standing πŸ˜”
So, all I've got to say is
YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Good f'king job, lovely to read the progress.

Ah bollocks,
Still not right. πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘
Was not driving as the lights are not working but my wife broke down so I had to go and save her. Drove fine but I thought I could see a faint smoke stream but put it down to bring paranoid.
Did about 12 miles on dual carriageway about 65-70
Then came to a hill and a slow car, foot down to over take and wow, clouds of white smoke. Then smoked for another 5 miles till I reached my wife.
I had no choice so hooked her up to tow her home. Managed okay with a faint smoke stream but difficult to tell with a V70 tailgating so close ...lol
Pulled okay, but I didn't give any Welly on the way home. Checked coolant, okay, oil, okay.
After speaking to James Martin it would appear it's unburnt diesel. So I need to check timing....AGAIN.
and then check injectors properly.
Then I need to check the FIP timing with a dial gauge which I haven't got 😟
The previous owner had a boost pin fitted. When I had the runaway I checked the timing and although the crank and cam were perfect the pump was out by a tooth, maybe two.
It could have jumped the teeth but we are also thinking that someone might have fiddled with the FIP timing and got it to run being a tooth out.
Of course this is all speculation and it's probably an injector but it's more time. Aaaaggggghhhhhh 😟😟😟

Injector refurb are Β£48+vat each for 200tdi so I guess 300tdi are similar price, not too bad.
Rigged all 4 up to their fuel pipes while they were off the engine and got my lovely wife to turn the starter while I watched them. 3 of them spay okay and make a ffffff noise, number 4 the spray looks okay but questionable but it makes a pop noise every time it sprays. I'm guessing that's not normal? Anyone know. I'm really short on money at the moment :-(

Sorry I have no idea, guess you could get just the one refurbished.

I have just read the complete thread and you obviously have a lot more experience than me. There isn't really a lot more for you to change. Difficult really but I guess sometimes you need a specialised to test something properly. I understand the injector need to pop at a certain pressure and spray pattern. Maybe the one injector is faulty if it seems visibly different by eye.

Well, I changed number 4 injector for a cheap used one that was sold as off a running engine.
Big difference. The two or three knocks from idle when blipping the throttle gently has now gone. I thought it was the vacuum pump 🀣
Smoke is a lot better. Starts easier and idles slightly faster and smoother. I'm guessing that injector was completely goosed still got a tapping from the engine, could be another injector but I will check the valve cleared again. Get a greyish white smoke under more than brisk acceleration and a black cloud when I floor it. I'm guessing it could be another injector but it could also be the FIP as it's had a boost pin and who knows who fiddled with it.

Well done , getting there,

Not got the turbo on mine but this might give you a few pointers, don’t think black smoke on heavy acceleration a major issue
Difficult to read but think I got there. I did the valve clearance when I put it all together but no harm in checking again. Re checked the timing beginning of the week and it was spot on.
I think it can only be injectors and/or someone has fiddled with the FIP stuff. They have put a boost pin in and probably adjusted the toothed wheel thing 😟

That's a good result with the injector, seems like your diagnosis was correct.

The saga continues but I think it's almost all over ...
I did a silly thing.......
I did two things and now I don't know which one solved it..... :-(
I replaced injector number 3 and then stripped all the timing cover off again just to check the cam pulley. Was perfect but decided to remove the cam belt and check and refit.
All back together and I took it on a 5 min run which includes 1 short motorway junction.
Power back as it should and black smoke when harshly accelerating. No white smoke at all from what I could tell but it was dark. Real test tomorrow. I'll take it to work. 40 minute drive will be a good test.

40 minute drive this morning went great. No clouds of white smoke and drove well. Was raining so was difficult to tell if it was road spray or faint white smoke. I'm pretty sure it was road spray...lol
Just got to find this tapping. Definitely cam speed and not crank speed.
I've done the clearences twice now so I'm fairly sure it's not that. I've listened with a stephoscope and can't pin it down. More apparent when touching the rocker cover.
I did notice some black staining on alloy when I removed the cover last time. I wonder if the oil isn't getting up the top as it should. Bit silly really. I didn't think to take all the rockers off and check all the oil ways. Maybe one is blocked?
I will take the aux belt off and try but I'm 99% sure the auxiliaries are not the issue. It would sound lovely if it weren't for the tapping. My hearing has never been great for this type of thing.... Lol

Do you think most likely it was the injector rather than timing belt being out?

Yes, I think so, I put the belt back exactly the same. Unless it is a bit temperamental. I have a dial gauge on its way so I will check with that to see what the current lift at TDC is,

Auxiliary belt removed and sound is no different. 😟
