I drove a diesel once, may god it was like pulling teeth.

Even my other half has said when she gets hers it has to be a V8.

Try a Td5 Discovery before you commit to getting a diesel Range Rover.

So you drove a duff one, mines not chipped and goes very well, quicker than any of my previous 4 x 4's and now doing 27mpg brim to brim. Diesel is cheaper than petrol here but it seems to me that anyone who thinks a petrol even on LPG can match the fuel economy of the diesel is suffering from self delusion, you can even run the P38 on bio diesel or diluted veg oil for even greater economy and the M57 engine does not drop liners. Cracked heads occur after overheats due to poor maintenance.

My DSE was returning at about 25-26p per mile....

My L322 on LPG is returning 22-23p per mile and is therefore cheaper to fuel....

Repairing it on the other hand....

You are comparing a P38 with an L322. the L322 diesel would be cheaper than your L322 petrol.

True on the comparison of P38 to L322....but the Oil burning L322 and an LPG'd L322 would be marginal on cost as to be damn near negligable....

I would much rather have an early LPG'd L322 than a Doozel with the GM Box....

If I could stretch to a TDV8 - then thats a different matter and then it would be Diesel all the way!

Boxes on both the petrol and the diesel have their problems, although as you rightly say the GM box is the worst of the two.
We all have our preferences, I don't like V8 engines of any sort and I prefer diesels to petrols. LPG for me just means carrying more weight, losing space and it has the potential to be a fire hazard in an accident, it's not for me.

Defo diesel, now I"II disagree with the others here, a manual gearbox for me, yes it takes a bit to launch a manual of the line, but I personally prefer a manual gearbox on any vehicle.

Mine averages 14 mpg on LPG. At 0.66 p/ltr it equates to 22p per mile. On a good run i get 16/17 mpg on LPG. Even with the starting on unleaded i cant see how this doesn't compare with diesel running costs?

Its cost effective if the LPG is already fitted to the vehicle, but a new decent multipoint LPG system will set you back 1700/2000 quid to fit and certify, it takes a lot of miles to recoup an LPG systems fitting cost, with any (if any) saving over diesel running costs.

Then there's the possible cost of an V8 engine rebuild with cooling system/top hat liners...

True, i bought mine with a Tartarini sequential m/point system already fitted. I've done over 20k miles in the first year so have seen the savings over diesel. Most of my journeys are long distance so LPG becomes even more cost effective. All in though with HG replacement in first year i would say it's a marginal saving but with a more refined drive & power when needed. If mine ever needs to be top hatted it's something i'd take on the chin & do.

Hello and welcome!

Each to their own of course, but before I bought my MY2000 P38 Vogue (a 4.6 V8), I test drove a few of the diesel models and found them severely lacking in both the pace and refinement that I'd expect from a car in the class of a Range Rover.

I don't think these were chipped, just standard, but the clattery nature and tractor soundtrack didn't exactly light my fire, and this would be the same even if they had more grunt.

Have a look at both before making your decision. Regardless of which fuel direction you go in, don't expect bullet proof reliability and if you're not prepared to tackle jobs yourself you'll need deep pockets.

The diesels aren't as well appointed inside either. DHSE's seem quite rare and almost never have sat nav, there are loads of petrol vogues though which come with all the toys.

I have a 4.6 Vogue.

The Sat Nav is crap, better to use a stand alone unit with up to date mapping especially if going to a country like France that is constantly building new roads.:)

Just get an updated disk, mine is a 2012 version & never had any problems. Cant stand the aftermarket 'bricks' on the dash & the fact it's built into the sound system is a huge plus.

I'd made up my mind to get a DSE after the V8 LPG Disco, but all those that cropped up nearby either had list of faults or coil spring conversions. The 4.6HSE came up on Autotrader after 5 months of watching and waiting and as the Disco's list of gremlins & £££ was growing, I was about to trek 400 miles round trip to get a DSE. This one had no faults and apart from saggy headlining and a few minor cosmetic issues, I decided to take a punt. Glad I did the as it's sequential LPG (unlike Disco) and returns between 12-16mpg on gas - effectively 30mpg!

Personally, I wouldn't rule out either - go for the one that ticks all the boxes, works as it should and has been well maintained.

Already well out of date for France. You need weekly or monthly updates to keep pace.:)
