Failed my control technique on a laundry list of problems. My attempt to fix the temperature gauge caused failing faults in the brake, reverse, head, side and indicator lights, the wipers and god knows where else.

The front universal joints are worn- and they were replaced by a professional 4x4 garage only 2 years/ 6000 km ago. In fact there is excess wear, play and loose nuts across most of the front axle and steering system... which makes me both annoyed and suspicious.

So this afternoon is out with the sockets and screwdrivers, to see how many of the fails I can quickly fix, and what I need to order replacement parts for. I hope the rear wheel bearings are a tighten up job, not a replace one...
 
The Landy fund took a hit today. Mrs K’s golf battery gave up, requiring replacement. Halfrauds were cheaper than anyone else with blue light discount and I got a few quid back for weighing in the old battery… The 90 jump started the golf to get it home so that I could swap the batteries over.
 
How big a job is the rear bearings? Haynes has it as 4 spanners, so I'm a little cautious.
I'm going to try just pulling the wheels off and looking for loose nuts to start with, as that is quick and easy to do...

Actually, it's really easy. It may be the 4x4 garagiste when fitting the new bearings fitted them lose but he should have used a DTi properly which negates any error. Sometimes it's just worth whipping the whole lot out, clean out all old grease, new Timkins in, rebuild, set and finish off with all new seals. This way you have absolute peace of mind.

But definitely try resetting float on existing bearings first, wheels back on and feel for any play...test run & then back home and recheck play.
 
As suggested by v8350 above, started pulling off wheels and hubs to reset float.

First rear wheel I tried, the lock nut moved as I was sticking the box spanner on it, and lock washer hadn't been folded at all... problem located! Tightened it up, and play is gone. The gasket is also gone... how surprising!
I'm going to need to do the bearing, but if that can wait until it's a little warmer, that would be good. Just get it through the control technique first.
Also, either locate my better axle stands that have been borrowed, or do the proper rural thing and cut logs to size. I must have chucked the last ones in the firewood heap!

I hope the front ones are the same.
EDIT:
Both rear wheels had loose nuts, and need new bearings, but tightened up enough to remove the play.
One front wheel, done professionally 2 years ago was loose, and the grease was filthy- so there must be a knackered seal... tighten up for now, replace later...
I'm just going to order 4 bearing sets, on the assumption that all 4 are shot!

@Alpinewoodsman , pls don't use logs to lift the Land Rover...should one log "go..." so will you :eek: Go find the axle stands, ideally 3-6tonne jobbies one for each corner :)

ps I'd never lend out axle stands to anyone in case they cock-up, not use properly and end up squished.

When I say logs, I mean 15-18" diameter rounds, cut straight on the bottom, and with a groove carved out on the top to hold the axle... so a wider footprint than most axle stands! Short of a bigger earthquake than we've had round here for 7 million years or so, it isn't going anywhere. And if we do get that size, the old, stone built house is coming down, which is even heavier than a Landie....
 
A semi successful day.

fitted a new temp sender conversion from Steve Parker’s. My temp gauge is now accurate hooray!

windscreen motor stopped working so in readiness for arrival of replacement I have removed the motor, wire and first wiper cog however paused on second as the small fixing holding the windscreen wiper arm head has rounded out so have given up for today. Back tomorrow.

good to know how dash comes off at least now.

End up drilling through the fitting as it had completely rounded off. End came off so was able to take gear out for wiper. Now ready for new motor and wiper kit.
 
Put some brush guards on the lights. Had to modify the rears slightly & drill/tap some holes for them. Replace a broken LED brake light & as normal wires are not the same colours so guess which is which.
Next weekend the young nephew learns to drive in junior trials.
