Just noticed this, although its been staring me in the face for the last couple of weeks since I put engine and box back in. Thers no way this fan will turn without hitting Steering Box, What the F!!!k have I done wrong this time.

The engine seems set too far back :(

200tdi sits much further back than the 300tdi, so maybe its a 200 chassis?
Measure centre of engine mount bolts both sides to the front crossmemebr and compare with others.

On the 200 you can sit on top of the rad and have your feet on top of the axle/panhard rod.

It was originaly a 1987 110 not sure what engine was in then but someones put disco 300 tdi in with mounts. Only found problem when steering box fitted back in

I got it as Rolling Chassis, but it did not have steering box on, put everything back to exactly where they were and now this.
It'll have a disco gearbox in it with the longer bellhousing like mine, I have never had a fan for same reason as you and it's been fine for over five years, put electric fan on if you are worried

Looks like you may just have to get rid of it and consider an electric fan setup.

That said, you said a “rolling chassis “ was the bulkhead and props on? Might not hurt to have a quick trial fit.
Before you even consider trying to move everything backwards and causing more issues.

J

Edit: or somebody with the same setup comes along^^^:)

Could be chassis is for the 200 set up where the engine is fitted back near the bulkhead. More pics of the whole thing ?

The Previous Owner who originally started it must have put mounts in wrong place, both sets of mounts are bolted on, not sure if I should move them or not, means another at least 12 new holes drilled through chassis, will get more pics tonight.

If you move engine and gearbox back then the propshafts wont fit. If gearbox in place with engine bolted to it and the engine is too far forward then the gearbox will be from a Discovery, about four inches longer bellhousing thus positioning engine four inches further forward.
If not then it's prob had disco set up and mounts been moved to suit.

It is Disco engine mounted to l277 box have not got Propshafts yet

Standard Defender props will be ok, only problem is the fan catching steering box, could cut some off the blades. disco pipes will fit (turbo and water hoses plus oil cooler pipes) so nice and easy.

I don't think they did, I think it was intended. I suspect their plan was a 300tdi the earlier further back position. What length of bell-housing on the LT77? If it was planned it would be a shorty. The LT77 behind a 300tdi is not a great idea.

Run without the viscous fan. But leave the cowling on & use electric fan.
If the engine mounts were in the wrong place the gearbox mounts would not line up ?

Ive read about people cutting blades, don't, think there would be much left if I cut mine.

Ive sent him a photo, waiting for him to get back to me

Gear box and engine sit on mounts perfect, So would have to move both to suit, if that would be possible to do.

If engine and box are in a good position, the prop shafts fit and the gear sticks come up in a usable position then dump the viscous and fit electric fan.
Can’t say about props as I haven’t got any yet but everything else seems to fit ok

It's not just as simple as that, my suspicion is, that as it is 1987, it was probably one of the 2.5's petrol or diesel, it could have been a V8 I guess but then it would not have had the LT77 gearbox but I guess it could have been changed too!

So lets assume it was a 2.5 engine with an LT77 gearbox, then the engine would sit fairly far back and the resultant position of the LT77 and the LT230 boxes is dictated by the engine, the prop-shafts therefore then suit this position. If you then move the engine forward with your existing gearbox you end up with the gear-stick in the fuse box!

It is common for the 300tdi to be fitted in the 2.5-200 position when done as a retrofit because it lets you leave the most things alone without modding and changing lots.

In your situation before you go any further you have the option to move it and then use Defender 300tdi parts for everything else, but you would need a Defender R380 gearbox because they never did the LT77 with the longer bellhousing like the Defender R380.

I have a 300tdi in my originally 2.5P Defender and I bought an Ashcroft R380 short shaft because I destroyed the LT77 fairly quickly behind the 300tdi (I knew it was coming but I just ran it till it died).

I would now like to sell the R380 short (less than 20,000miles on it) and get a Defender R380 or convert my short-shaft to a Defender box and basically make it as a stock 300tdi would be because I am not happy with the air filter arrangement and I would like stock hoses and things too (really I am just itching for a Defender project!).

It was a 2.5 D in with the LT77. The PO. used a template to fit mounts but never got round to fitting steering box , hence me finding problem now. What’s the problems with the mating of 300 tdi to the LT 77s. ??
